You should give Echo Night Beyond a try if you own a Playstation 2.
It is one of the best adventures I've played on a console.

Not sure if Lighthouse fits the bill, but it's a really good one. It takes place in the present, but in a parallel dimension with all sorts of weird, interesting technology. Another good, albeit scary, one is 7 days a skeptic. It takes place on a spaceship and you have to try to stay alive...it was definitely one of the scarier games I've ever played though so be warned lol.
