Well, I'm not sure if there will be retail boxed copies later on. But if you pledge 100$ (or 110$ international) you'll receive a boxed copy.

With the budget they've already got pledged, they can make a kickass 2D adventure. If there's still some of us left to buy it when it gets released, we'll do more to help Double Fine than we would if we backed it now...

I just love the idea that anyone can participate and all the people that want to throw away extra cash could help these ideas become a reality. Cognition Kickstarter 2.0 needs to happen....jk. Thats not how it works sadly.

I thought Ron made a good point regarding game length -- I too wish that gamers would be more receptive to shorter games, and wouldn't automatically think of them as lesser value. When I was pledging, the possible length of the game didn't even enter my mind. I'm playing the Blackwell games at the moment and I find them the perfect length (I think the first two games have taken me around 3 hours a piece). Obviously for games of more "epic" proportions, that are trying to deliver a globe-trotting adventure or whatever, a longer game makes more sense.

99% of the people that pledged to Double Fine were nostalgic fans of Schafer and Gilbert (and possibly Double Fine). I'm convinced it wouldn't work for less known adventure game developers...

I agree, mainly. I don't think that it wouldn't/couldn't work, but it would be noticeably more difficult and certainly wouldn't gather this much money or impact (unless there was something else about it that made it spectacular).

yeah, a big part of why this worked is because of tim schafer's very broad fan base. Probably a good chunk of the backers identify primarily as psychonauts fans. He has a track record spanning decades of working on successful projects. And hes just generally funny and likeable. I just dont think jane has that kindv pull to that extent.

The mystique of this project is that it's something that should happen but hasn't/can't without the fans. Someone who is still working in the genre isn't going to be able to leverage that narrative. But someone like Al Lowe probably could, for example, because he's well liked and has been largely blacklisted from the industry because of his association with adventure games. Quote:
Although the money they're at now is still not a lot for an established San Francisco-based studio. It's luxurious if you're a small Polish company or something, but making games with experienced AAA staff in our tech capital is another matter. I think some people might be surprised/disappointed that this project is still going to show some of these limitations. |

I want to watch the documentary afterwards, but no while they're still making the game. I'm afraid it would give away too much about the game.
I didn't care much for the 30 minutes of Tim Schafer and Ron Gilbert. I was a bit disappointed that they had so little new to say about adventures. Nothing I didn't know already, anyway. They were constantly peeking at their notes, especially RG. But what bugged me most was that there was no chemistry between them. |

Yeah, but they already had it in their youth, and it's that "awkward silence", because they'll struggle to find it again. It's like a childhood lovers who meet each other at the school reunion. But i've seen some positive things, and i'm actually glad Gilbert is obviously much more involved in it than speculated at first.

Well, first Ron was Tim's boss and now it's the other way round in a way.
They're both grown ups, though and surely can deal with the situation. They might even crack a few jokes about it and as long as Tim acknowledges Ron - and we know he does - it could be quite funny. Right now they seem to tiptoe around each other quite a bit. But then again it's a bit stupid to read that much into a single video of two people I don't know at all. If they made GK4 they'd get a gazillion dollars in the first day. Just saying.

@diego and @Shnubble
Oh come on, are you serious? I'm sure they have a very relaxed relationship, which doesn't really show in the video, that's all. Here, let me quote from a 2010 article: http://kotaku.com/5646512/tim-schafe...t-gets-funnier While it's been nearly two decades since they've officially worked in the same studio, they've stayed in touch. Schafer even let Gilbert work out of Double Fine's offices over the years. "I'm really horrible working at home because all I do is other things rather than work," Gilbert said. "Being able to come into an office and be surrounded by other people helps." That's what led to the job offer, Gilbert said. "For the last couple of months Tim has been loaning me his desk here, as he has in the past," Gilbert said. "We have just been talking about different ideas I've had for games, kinda going back and forth like we do, and then Tim suggested, 'Hey why don't you come here and build this thing.' |

Here's a Making the Pitch Video article and a 30 minute interview with Tim Schafer at GameSpot.

From less than $1,000 an hour to $17,000 the past hour, and $22,000 the hour before that. You have a gift for understatement.
(And what shall I do?... To go from $60 to $100 or not, that is the question...)

I don't like the T-shirt and I'm disappointed that it's just a DF poster which has nothing to do with the game. Bad decision, imo.
On the other hand, I'd already pledged $100 long before even the box was mentioned. So I'm getting one gift after another for the same price. And I DO want the box! |
