LucasArts even though I voted on Sierra by mistake. Main reason is SCUMM.

No reason to compare them anymore to my mind. Both companies made great adventure games. ( Lucas games were better to mind, more polished, more funny, more 'adult' - sorry I couldn't resist - ).
Anyway, a better thing would be to compare nowadays adventure games to Sierras/Lucas ones. Have you seen DreamFall and Broken sword, which seem to be the reference today? Do you even want to play those games? I mean, I'm a big fan of adventure games, but seeing those realistic awful 3D backgrounds ( compared to wonderful painted 15 years old Sierras/Lucas games ), I'm really disapointed.

Hey, no fair throwing your experience in my face. Maybe if I'd spent some time developing games professionally, I might know more about the subject.

I'm confused here. When you said "I don't see Sierra pushing technology, though" in your original post, was that addressing my earlier post about how Sierra fomented advances in hardware?

When Sierra wasn't even starting developing King's Quest 1, this charming treasure hunt, Infocom was releasing Deadline, a game whose plot can compare to Colonel Bequest, going out in 1990.
I loved Infocom, too. What's your point, and what does Infocom have to do with pushing technology?

I'm not sure what your definition of "many" is, but judging from the bales of letters we got, I'd most certainly say many people did -- and weren't all that happy about it. OTOH, many people ALSO transitioned from having no sound card to having an Ad-lib or MT-32 as a direct result of Sierra games, and just about everyone was overjoyed that they did.

But you weren't a programmer, hence my point about technology also relating to software quality and innovation

It wasn't in fact.
I was just saying that Sierra was not really setting technological milestones.
LucasFilm neither, when you think about it

My point is that Infocom software technology was mighty impressive, putting all those games on some tiny platforms (Planetfall on a TRS80 for instance)

Sierra really supported a large panel of hardware, especially sound harware.
It was a powerful experience going to a friend's place and plugging Space Quest 3 on an expander!
I'd say that it was a great feat, very respectful for the gamers, to support legacy hardware for such a long time (EGA, speaker, and so on...).

I played some LucasArts games, but I've always preferred the Sierra games, despite the dying. something about the immersion and the maturity always felt more engrossing to me.

You're all insane. Sierra maturity? Lack of soul does not maturity make.

Sierra, but only because I've played so bloody many of them over such a long period of time. I can't say that they're necessarily better games, just more nostalgic for me personally. I love the classic LucasArts games to death, I just have more fond memories playing games like Conquest of Camelot and Colonel's Bequest.

My (likely bullshit) interpretation of the two companies' general philosophies is that Lucasarts would generally take a very specific, tried and true sort of approach (after the initial creation of SCUMM, of course) then polish and refine it to perfection, whereas Sierra would often just try alot of things that seemed like they'd be cool. This resulted in Lucasarts being a lot more dependable, but when Sierra got something right it could be very special and outdo most of the Lucasarts games. My general view is that Lucasarts made a lot of good to great games, one or two masterpieces and the ocassional mediocre one, while Sierra made a lot of mediocre games, some good and a decent amount of flawed masterpieces.

You may be right. But I still enjoyed Shivers more than most of the LucasArts games I've played. Call it a matter of poor taste?

Lucasarts is way better than Sierra! They've got better quality games, more replayability, super funny, and have much more memorable characters.

I like Sierra too but there aren't that many games of there's that I'd ever play again. The only ones worth replaying in my eyes is the King's Quest series.

This entire arguement is purely subjective no matter how scientific anyone tries to make it sound. If you love Sierra or Lucas Arts, I really don't think anyone will get you to change your mind. Man this is worse than religion.
