Leisure Suit Larry gets the SOMI:SE treatment

Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards returns in HD for the series' 25th anniversary in Q4 2012. This will be the second update of the bawdy 1987 Sierra adventure game classic, which went from 16-color EGA art and a keyboard interface to stunning VGA graphics and mouse controls in 1991.

EGM reports the update will be handled by Replay Games, with the assistance and blessing of series creator Al Lowe -- something that the most recent entries in the series didn't have. The game is planned for almost every PC, console and mobile digital distribution platform.

"I'm overjoyed to see Larry released from his digital dungeon after all this time, and be placed in the hands of someone who understands him and wants to see him, brought back to the forefront by people who love him and understand him," Lowe told EGM.

If successful, Replay Games plans to keep on doing the HD updates, and doing them well, working its way through the series' original seven installments (Leisure Suite Larry 4: The Missing Floppies will remain missing). Replay is also planning on new adventures for Larry Laffer in the internet age.
Now if only Sierra/Acti-Blizzi-Vision follows up with Gabriel Knight & the Roberta Williams games. :D

I'm surprised this isn't bigger news.

thejobloshow 10-10-2011 06:36 PM

I'm excited at least! You better believe I'll be spreading this news around.

Monolith 10-10-2011 07:49 PM

This has just blown my mind. So many memories!

Agreed...it still isn't on the front or news page of the site. Still between this and the original versions of the Sierra games being re-released digitally it's nice to see that Activision is actually paying attention to the value of their back-catalog.

dazsin 10-11-2011 06:12 AM

Brilliant news, I for one will be buying them

It wasn't posted yesterday because we don't post hearsay news without confirming. However solid a story looks, it's just gossip until then.

Good news to me. I've never played any of the Leisure Suit Larry games, so this, as I've said plenty of times before, will be ideal. The more classic adventures that are re-released in HD or Special Edition form the better!

I just hope that Jane Jensen gets the rights to Gabriel Knight next!

Jaesun 10-11-2011 06:52 PM

Did they actually get the rights back from Activision, or are they doing this for Activision?

Monolith 10-11-2011 07:00 PM

Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers SE!!!!!!

How encouraging is this? Great news! I look forward to something new especially. Let's hope some of the damage the last couple of abominations caused can be undone.

SamandMax 10-11-2011 10:16 PM

Awesome, first Lucasarts, now Sierra. Bring back all the classics!

JuntMonkey 10-12-2011 09:38 AM

The only slightly disappointing thing is that this is only LSL1 so far, and supposedly it's not coming until late next year? I've already played 3 different versions of that game (Softporn, LSL1, remake) probably 20+ times. LSL2 and LSL3 will be the ones that benefit the most from HD upgrades. Let's just hope we get to them before 2014!

I am looking forward to the 2020 release of LSL7. :(

I understand what you're saying - do LSL6 or LSL7 really need the HD treatment? It's still exciting, I've never heard of this Adventure Mob developer - perhaps you guys could organise an interview?

I can't believe that Lust in Space is actually a possibility now... several years AFTER the death of Sierra. You can't keep a good franchise down.

In my opinion, no. And neither did Monkey Island. LSL already has a remake which looks much better than the HD screenshots. Make up your own mind.

Yeah, loved those crazy jagged shapes and outrageous colour. They went nuts with this in Larry 6: http://i.imgur.com/gVm2v.png

Oh man, I hope they're able to wrangle the original voice actors. Hearing the banter between the narrator and Larry again would make my decade.

jannar85 10-13-2011 08:09 AM

I think it will be fun playing this game in HD, up-to-date.
I've played the original EGA-version and VGA-version, so why not this too? I'm looking forward to it (and playing it on my 40' screen)

The only sad thing is that they aren't true to the original backgrounds, but oh well.

From VentureBeat:

Quote:

The actual developer will be Adventure Mob, a game studio that will use the Unity Technologies game engine for cross-platform game creation. Oded Sharon, chief executive of Adventure Mob, created the studio in June along with Oran Bar-tal. The company is a spin-off of Corbomite Games, which was making adventure games.
Corbomite Games made Pizza Morgana, which was supposed to be an episodic series but I think only had one episode released.
