Wow, there are loads of words/phrases used to describe adventure games; I wouldn't know where to begin.
This springs to mind, though: Picking up everything that isn't nailed down

By far my favorite is the various hillarious comments you get from different games when you click "use" on yourself.
The most recent one I played was Dirty Split where his comment to that was "There will be plenty of time for that later..." edit: eh wait I just realized that comment had nearly nothing to do with this thread, oh well I'll just "word" what Fein said then. |

Let's see if anyone gets this one:
"Soon, my friend... soon." |

"You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike."
"You have entered a dark place. You are likely to be eaten by a grue." Certainly two of the most iconic phrases, anyway.

Probably me thinking to myself "Okay. I need to get the cracker from the drain to give to the bird to get the feather to tickle the wizard to get the key to open the desk to get the mouldy sandwich. But how do I get the cracker?"

For me it's definitely immersion.
That's the thing I'm looking for and this expression contains other very other important elements like atmosphere, story and character development.

Growing up on Sierra adventures it was always:
"Save early, save often!" |
