Any games like the Myst series?
Hello all,
I would like to know what games are out there that are similar to the Myst series? Specifically, I'm looking for the sort of solitary adventures through strange places with breath-taking graphics and immersive music that I have come to enjoy in Myst and its sequels. I recently came across the Rhem games on this site but I don't think I will play those as the screenshots I saw had some very amateurish graphics. Thanks you for your help, manuel |

Sentinel/Descendants in time may be something for you to check out. It's solitary gameplay with tons of puzzles and no story worth mentioning.
I wouldn't compare it to the Myst series though which is way better imho. But I did enjoy it since it satisfied my craving for puzzles.

This list is by no means exhaustive and I have no intention of playing all of them.
P = puzzle game, meaning not much story and/or not much exploration S = spooky/horror B = breathtakingly beautiful graphics. In my opinion, that is. Some real places, some fantasy worlds. * = recommended because I enjoyed them very much. Other people will recommend different games. 7th Guest, The (P) 11th Hour, The (P) A.D. 2044 Alida *Amber (S) Amerzone *Anacapri: The Dream (B) *A Quiet Weekend in Capri (B) Aura 1 + 2 *Barrow Hill (S) Beyond Time Bioscopia Cassandra Galleries (P) Celtica Chaos: A Fantasy Adventure Chemicus Clandestiny (P) Comer (B) Connections Crystal Key 1 + 2 * Dark Fall 1 + 2 + 3 (S) Dogday Drowned God (P) Eastern Mind: The Lost Souls of Tong-Nou Entombed Forgotten, The Frankenstein: Through the Eyes of the Monster Golden Gate (B) Gord@k (P) Jewels of the Oracle 1 + 2 (P) Karma: Curse of the 12 Caves (P) Labyrinth of Time Lightbringer/Cydonia Lighthouse Martian Chronicles, The Milo (P) Mirage Morpheus Mummy, Tomb of the Pharoah *Myst 1 tm 5 (B) Noir: A Shadowy Thriller (B) **Obsidian (B) Opsys (P) Outcry Physicus Piri: The Explorer Ship Qin Reah Rama Realms of Illusion/Sentinel: Descendants in Time Rhem 1 tm 4 (P) *Rhiannon (S) Riddle of the Sphinx 1 + 2 *Safecracker 1 + 2 (P) Schizm/Mysterious Journey 1 + 2 Secrets of the Luxor *Shivers 1 + 2 (P and S) SPQR Timelapse *Zork Nemesis Last edited by Fien; 10-17-2010 at 07:26 AM. |

Fein has given you an excellent list.....i agree that Rhem is not at all the same quality as the Myst games.... i would not bother with them...
SPQR is a remarkable one of the list..it sets you in Ancient Rome and you have a major challenge to solve, to make this game the creators literally re created historic Rome, it is a point and click but the city model is accurate and it is a remarkable and fun journey... older format game and may take a bit of tweaking but look around and you will find help. Sentinel Descendents in Time is indeed a great one to continue your Mystlike Adventures with... a Game that has amazingly beautiful graphics but is more interactive in that you are in contact with a lot of other "people" in the game is Dreamfall, the second of a series of two games with another third installment on the way called The Longest Journey...the graphics of Dreamfall are beautiful beyond compare...the only thing that is essential to enjoy it is to reverse the X and Y axis of the movement controls and you will love it. But again, it is not solitary. Crystal Key 1 and 2 are nice adventures in beautiful worlds..as are the Atlantis series...with minimal people but lots of tough puzzles and lovely graphics... but overall, Fein has put most of them in a nice list for you... two more i would add to that list are Aura 1 and 2...both are very Mystlike... i will warn you about the two Schizm titles..they are VERY VERY hard and non intuitive puzzles abound..ie there is no reationality to them and they are hard to figure out. The graphcis tho are lovely and again mystlike....

The Myst games are my all-time favorites, so I heartily agree that Aura 1 and 2 are the closest you will get and the Schizm games are not far behind. (They're called "Mysterious Journey" in some places). Get the DVD version if you can as they left out some things to fit on CDs.
Riddle of the Spinx 1 and 2, The Omega Stone, Drowned God, Obsidian, Lighthouse, Zork Nemesis, the Journeyman series and Labrynth of Time, while not exactly like Myst games, are some of my very favorites which I think you'll enjoy too. Read reviews of them and see how they are similar or different. Last edited by Dara100; 10-19-2010 at 08:44 AM. |

Fien has a great list. Because the list is so large, I might pare it down a bit. Shortly after Myst came out, there was a stampede of confessed Myst clones. To pare the list down to those that appeared in that general time frame, I would suggest
Shivers 1 - Sierra Lighthouse - Sierra Amber - Hue Forest Entertainment* Reah - Project Two Interactive Timelapse - GTE Entertainment Comer - Self published Many of the titles Fien posted had some sort of storyline. Which, to me, is the anti-Myst. Myst represented total discovery. "I don't know where I'm going, and even when I get there I'm not sure why...until a final scene wraps it up." * Amber is a game that has a hard time running on current machines. Primarily because its QuickTime requirements are not forward compatible with current versions. Many of thse games, including most on Fien's list might be difficult to find.

Went to the link, but didn't see anything that would help me move Amber into my system.
