Default What game got you hooked on Adventure gaming?

For me it was Shivers. My appetite was wet by Myst (I even read the books), but the whole haunted museum thing was so well played in Shivers. It's the only adventure game I've played more than once.

This is kind of like the thread about what was your first memory of adventure gaming, so they might me merged.

But mine was Myst/Riven. It was so hard, but so worth it!! The graphics, the story. I loved it.

Riddle of the sphinx.
Not knowing about any other adventure game, I throught it was the best game in the world! Until I finished nearly 40 others, that is. Matter of fact,
I'm suffering from a bout of BAAGS, and just bought Sherlock Holmes Secret of the Silver Erring, Rhem, Crystal Key II, Myst: Uru, Myst V: End of Ages, and Agatha Christy: and then there where none.

Well I think the one that actually got me hooked was Zork. Not the first one I played mind you. God sometimes I feel old.

That IS true. This thread says 'hooked', not 'first played'. lol But it would still be Myst for me.

Myst. But if I'd played Shivers before Myst, I'd be saying Shivers. And if I'd played Secret of Monkey Island before Myst or Shivers, I'd be saying Secret of Monkey Island. And if I'd played Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers before playing Myst, Shivers, or Secret of Monkey Island, I'd be saying Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers. etc. I think the first game you play has a built-in advantage -- at least if you enjoy it.

That's defiantly true in most cases. Myst was my first and I remember as a kid being extremely proud of beating Myst without a walk through, but it was the atmosphere and construction of Shivers that got me truly hooked on adventure gaming.

Zork was great. I got this on CD compilation full of classic text games I bought at a thrift store for 50 cents, and I was surprised at how much fun these old games were. Definably a first rate example of how it doesn't take top the line graphics to really suck you in.

OMG, what?!?! I think that's impossible. I couldn't even make it off Msyt island by myself. And I didn't get into it until about middle school.

Riven. I loved the idea of virtually exploring a world and figuring out what happened by reading, observing, and working out the puzzles.

I was in middle school at the time. Took me a little under a week to do it, but I've never been able to get very far in the other Myst games without a walkthrough. I would be blown away if any one went through Riven without using a walkthrough at least a few times.

Well my first adventure game was Myst, though I was quite young at the time and really didn't comprehend the notion of genres as regards video games. Not long after that, however, my brother purchased Sam & Max: Hit the Road, which most certainly had me hooked. After a good deal of begging on my part for something just like it he picked up Monkey Island 1, followed shortly thereafter by it's sequel. It's been my favorite genre ever since.

Ditto. I got Fate of Atlantis, Day of the Tentacle, and MI 1 and 2 (Full Throttle may have been in there, too) in one of those Classic game packs Lucasarts used to put out at CostCo one day (then known as Price Club). Indy is the only one I really played for a while seeing as how I loved Indiana Jones. I got to the other ones quite a bit later.
