Mmm... i found him a bit boring in comparison to Zoe and April. As a character, he didn't seem as 'fleshed out' as much.

My top 10 (probably not 100% sure about the order):

10. Simon the Sorcerer
9. Nico Collard (from BS3)
8. April Ryan
7. Grim Fandango
6. Sam & Max (i know that's 2 but they're inseparable )
5. Grace Nakimura (from GK2)
4. Lewton
3. Guybrush Threepwood
2. Gabriel Knight
1. George Stobbart

Maybe that's the reason why I liked him. Half-way through Dreamfall - which, to clear things right away, I absolutely loved - I grew tired of Tornquist's struggling, tender but strong, bruised but courageous female characters.

My Top Ten are:

10- Nina Kalenkov - Tough character, willing to face everything for the
truth, a kind of Dana Scully.
9- Nicholas Farepoynt - Coolest medieval guy and talk with the dead too,
a bit of a loner doing good and getting all the bad rap at the same
time.
8- Phoenix Wallis - An ambitious young woman, love how the game portray
her conflicts with the society she lives in.
7- Robert Cath - A very charismatic character with lots of charm and
don't let things stop him.
6- Lucas Kane - The normal guy throw into caos suddenly, I suffer with
him through all the game.
5- Victoria McPherson - A tough cookie, just like her grandpa.
4- Tex Murphy - Not your typical PI, love his humor and style.
3- April Ryan - What you won't like, she's tough, friendly(some times)
and a great leader. A great role model for womens.
2- Perry Rhodan - Intriguing character, that fit the hero role.
1- George Stobbart- Love the way he's make a hero but not exaclty fit the
role. He's kind of the hero by accident.

If you haven't voted, submit a top ten (or at least a top five)!

George, Tex, Gabe, Guybrush... it's a predictable compiled list, isnt it. No surprises, except perhaps Lewton.

Yeah, I was a little surprised how poorly April Ryan was doing for awhile, but she made a hearty comeback of late.

Well to push April a bit further up the list, and to finally make a post as opposed to just lurking as I've been doing for the past couple of years, here's mine...

10 Lucas Kane
9 Peter Wright
8 Ben from Full Throttle
7 Zöe - Not got the wit of April, but well drawn-out
6 Sam
5 George Stobbart - the naive adventurer to a "t"
4 Gabriel Knight - Tim Curry & some of the writing in GK3 just overplays the boorishness a bit too much for my taste. But still fantastic overall.
3 Guybrush Threepwood - The perfect Pirate Only Gaby & Grace rival him for one-liners as far as my memory goes...
2 Grace Nakimura - 3 games & 3 3 actors & yet they all do a great job. The perfect foil for Gaby.
1 April Ryan - what more can you want? Realistic, well-acted, character develops over time (& in both games), and just really likeable.

Not wanting to be a trouble-stirrer, but Victoria McPherson & Kate Walker just don't cut it as complex female characters compared to the three above

My current choices:

10.Oscar (Syberia) There must be a real beating heart buried beneath this tin man. He is an emotionally challenged best friend who gives what he can and always stays cool.
9. Atrus (Riven) A deep thinker with a weight on his shoulders and a huge moral compass.
8. Burns Flipper (TlJ) This scary bitter guy in his acrobatic wheelchair speaks to the inner torture of all the disappointed, walking wounded and sad people everywhere.
7. Victoria McPherson (Still Life) Totally independent and tough. She could chew nails and look like an angel doing it. She also could have baked cookies all day long but battles evil doers instead.
6. Manny (Grim Fandango) A rich full-bodied voice gives depth to the character, a man of many frailties who is also noble where it counts most.
5. Kate Walker (Syberia) Capable, smart, lovely and focused. She has a soft spot for a sad story and is a solid character who represents transition and the enigmas therein.
4. George Stobbart (BS) An unlikely hero easily swayed. This “every man” is a little selfish, a little afraid of commitment, a little slow to emotion but a great friend who makes you laugh, is willing to learn and who tries not to let a friend down. However, he could break your heart.
3. Catherine (Riven) Strong, wrapped in mystery, exceptionally beautiful, humble and wise.
2. April Ryan (TLJ) Her youthful spirit is troubled and rebellious but she is creative, brave, funny and kind.
1. US. Since I can’t think of anyone else right now, I’ll say the collective “we” who take up the challenges these characters face.

Yes, you are right, Fienepien. I guess their impact on the game seemed more than secondary. But I do stand corrected.

Phod, why don't you post another Top 10? I know that things aren't final here yet, but one thread once in two weeks it's too little... Just a suggestion, here, but I would like to have a Top 10 each week

Hehe! You're probably right.

I'll put one together for later today.

1. Guybrush Threepwood-Just a likeable, really funny guy. Plus he is a pirate after all.
2. Crow-Yes, he's always good for a laugh. He has some of the greatest lines of any adventure game character I know.
3. Murray-How can you not love an evil demonic skull? Also has some of the best lines. I know he has a soft spot in there somewhere.
4. Manny Calavera-He's just such a cool character, and I love his voice.
5. April Ryan-For being a character who just happens to be special and at first is unwilling to accept and believe what has happened to her, but then eventually chose to get involved with this world she never knew existed. She's a character that did the most growing I think, for better or for worse. Of course she wouldn't be such a great character without the great story to back her up.
6. George Stobbart-How can you not love George Stobbart? His sense of humor, his love of history, the fact that he's from California, and his insistence upon showing random people objects that he happened to pick up, and asking their opinions on them.
7. Glottis-Another loveable character. I just think he's really cute.
8. Prince Alexander-Perhaps the only reason I have him on the list is because Robbie Benson voices him, but hey, he's quite the hero himself. Going through so many dangers just to be with the woman he loves. That's persistence.
9. Zanthia-For being a great female protagonist. I know she's not the only one, but she had style, with her clothes changing trick. And she wouldn't put up with anything.
10. LeChuck-Because Guybrush wouldn't be Guybrush without him. What would Guybrush do if he couldn't chase after LeChuck?

I didn't want to have to rank them, but those are my favorites. Now, grant it I haven't played every classic adventure game out there, so it explains why certain characters didn't make the list. I could also do honorable mentions, but I'll just keep it at that.

Edit: Just realized you asked for main characters. Oh well.

Whoops. Just noticed i've put Grim Fandango instead of Manny Calavera.

This is going to be hard but here goes.

#1 Liesure Suit Larry - I feel I can relate to this guy. Never gets apreciated for anything and usually tries too hard to impress people.

#2 Nancy Drew - Loved these books as a kid. Can't beat a classic gone modern.

#3 Guybrush Threepwood - No matter how bad the situation gets, he always comes out on top.

#4 Rodger Wilco - Another guy who just tries to do his job and ends up saving the universe. Can't get any better than that.

#5 Gabriel Knight - Arogant, cocky, and always gets into more trouble than he's worth. Award for most unlikely to become a warrior of the light.

#6 Purple Tentacle - What more do you need to take over the world? Arms!!

#7 George Stobbartt - Who else are you going to call when you're face to face with a dragon on an enchanted hill? eh?

#8 Manny Calavera - This guy can turn the most mundane business into an enterprise in just 1 year.

#9 Lenny Brisco - Only one word needed for this guy. Zinger!

#10 Rincewind - This guy is turning into soap opera material. From body switching and girls who would prefer his evil twin, who knows what this guy will get into next. Oh! I know! Toruble.
