Tips - adventure games with gloomy atmospheres
I'm sure this has popped up by someone else, but I can't seem to find any that includes games that I haven't already played.
Anyone got any ideas? I don't care about the graphics aslong as the story's good. I really want some with a bit of a gloomy atmosphere. I like murders or games that takes someone from his/her world and plunges him/her into another. (because of a murder or strange cult, etc etc) I'd rather not play any fantasy/myst-ish games, but once again it all depends on the story. Those I've already played: CSI Scratches Phantasmagoria I & II Gabriel Knight series Still Life Next Life TLJ Dreamfall Dracula Origins Dracula 3 Sanitarium Syberia I & II Overclocked The Lost Crown FBI: Art of Murder Fahrenheit / Indigo Prophecy Darkness Within: In Pursuit of Loath Nolder Broken Sword series If I can't find any I might have to force myself to play .F.E.A.R. and the like. *shudder* :( |

Too bad you don't want Myst-ish games since they're full of other worlds.
Obsidian is an old classic where you end up in a bizarre world, it's not exactly gloomy, rather upside down.

Police Quest III: The Kindred features lots of murders and even a satanic cult.
I have no mouth and I must scream is really disturbing, features plenty of violence and a gloomy, dark-themed, adult-oriented storyline.

Oh, don't play F.E.A.R. What a letdown that was.
You could try The Dark Eye. It's a claymation adventure that, while very light on puzzles, is as gloomy as can be since it's based off of Edgar Allen Poe's work. Alternatively, The Blackstone Chronicles takes place in an abandoned asylum. You speak with the ghosts of past residents, and their stories can be pretty grim. |

Instead of F.E.A.R, if you're going in that direction maybe look into Silent Hill?
You've already played my recommendations for adventure games. |

Black Dahlia! Great film noir-esque game. There is also Ripper, from the same creators.

I must agree with the people on their recommendations; Barrow Hill and the two Dark Falls-since you liked the Lost Crown and the creator helped and made those, respectively. The Black Mirror is very moody, and Blackstone Chronicles is so *real* and dark. I have not yet played "Dark Eye", but I've heard it's very good and gloomy. Too bad you don't like Myst-like games. The original series of Myst had a dark under-story.
A question to Andrea or others: I've also heard great, but few, reviews on "I Have No Mouth But I Must Scream". I really want to buy it, but on Amazon (where I shop) it's up to $60!!!!! Anyone know somewhere else possible where it's cheaper? lol Dark Eye and Blackstone Chronicles are kind of hard to find so they too are a bit expensive, but not NEARLY that expensive!!! lol

I found I have no mouth in a bookshop, here in Italy, paired with a collection of novellas from Harlan Ellison - but I guess I was just lucky. I don't know where you could look - maybe some offer on eBay?

You lucky duck...*sticks tongue out* I would, but I don't really trust Ebay. Amazon will compensate you your money if the sender doesn't send it, and I have no idea how to "bid". Amazon is just so much easier for me, but also a pain when prices are that ridiculous. *sigh* I'll just content myself with other games until prices drop a bit...or the next great game comes into my possession! lol ^_^
EDIT: Just looked on Ebay, no luck even *finding* the game. :'(

I have "I have no mouth" and doesn't care much for it.
It's only in a jewelcase, but hasn't been played more than 10 minutes from back in the days, when I got it. Oh my! Just checked amazon.com and it seems the lowest price for "Used - like new" is $51!! :O Guess I should hold on to it then, lol.

Well I must admit that I never completed it either. Too disturbing, and usually I'm all for unsettling games (and, in general, stories), but this one is just too disturbing from times to times. One day, anyway, I'll have to finish it!

You could play the AGS game 5 Days A Stranger, and its sequels 7 Days a Skeptic, Trilby's Notes, and 6 Days a Sacrifice. They fit the bill well.

Oh, dang it! *snaps finger* Could have alked you into giving it to me. You never finished it? Is it so disturbing, like Blackstone Chronicles, because it kind of really happened, or what? lol

Because the themes it deals with - suicide, rape, genocide, etc. - are treated in a disturbing, unnerving, metaphysical way that's often too unsettling even my nerves

Dreamweb is probably one of the most gloomy games I've ever played, if gloomy means what I think it means.
