Great thread!

But... would Frotz be worth a mention?

Website : http://code.google.com/p/iphonefrotz/wiki/FrotzMain
iTunes : http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/M...287653015&mt=8

Not really a big fan of old-school text adventures myself though...

I got an iPod Touch for Christmas and so far I'm very impressed with the hardware. There's great potential as a platform for games, if Rolando is anything to go by. It's a puzzle platformer rather than adventure but well worth the £5.99 for such a nice game.

The closest to an adventure I've played so far is The Stone of Destiny, which is a hidden object game with the occasional 'puzzle' and a bit of story thrown in. Got it for a £0.58 over the holidays at what I presume is a discount. Having played for about an hour it's certainly worth getting at this price. Basically all you do is try to find a list of items placed within a scene. The scenes look too photoshopped but the rest of the presentation is excellent.

I think I'll try out 1112 episode 1. Keep your opinions of the games you've tried coming in, I'm sure over time the list of adventure games will increase.

Of course it would! I'm not a great fan of text adventures myself, but I would say that it certainly falls within the genre. I think Frotz is great. For those who are into that sort of thing, it provides countless hours of fun for free.

As far as non-adventure games for iPhone go, I can personally recommend:
  • Orions: Legends of Wizards; very good strategic turn-based collectible card game. A sort of Puzzle Quest meets Magic: The Gathering
  • Vay: a Japanese-style RPG, ported from the old-school Sega CD system
  • Puzzle Quest; you know this one from every platform out there. Not the best incarnation, but... it's Puzzle Quest!
  • Hero of Sparta; a pretty cool-looking hack-'n-slash game
  • Warfare Inc.; a very nice C&C-like RTS game

...and for the jailbreakers out there, there is of course ScummVM for iPhone.

I agree that Frotz should be on there and I completely forgot about it. I've also played Rolando and think it's one of the most polished game experiences out there so far. It was $9.99 I definitely do not regret spending. Here's hoping for a Rolando 2.

As for ScummVM, since Beneath the Steel Sky is now freeware I bet someone could repackage the ScummVM engine to specifically come with and only run that game and release it for free on the store. That would be kinda cool actually.

Very doubtful. For one, I don't think that software for jailbroken iPhones is developed in the same way as "official" apps, i.e. through Apple's SDK with all its restrictions (that do not exist in the unofficial SDK). At the least, I think parts of ScummVM may have to be rewritten to use Apple's SDK. Second: copyright/distribution rights. I reckon these are still with the original developers/publishers and you will need their permission. It's the same reason that Doom or Quake isn't going to appear in the App Store unless id Software gives permission, even though the engine has been open source for a long time.

Still, interesting thought.

There is now a free trial version of 1112 available.

I actually had a little trouble installing it and a message popped up, but it seems ok now. Have yet to try playing it yet.

Could you update the first post, please? Then we'll always have a (hopefully) complete list right where we can find it easily.

The Edit button is no longer available after editing the first post once. I think you can only edit once as some kind of limit. Otherwise, I would love to.

Oh, that's too bad. I would love to keep up with everything adventure on the iPhone, but as I won't be able to get it all at the moment it is availble, the list would be extremely helpful. Searching in the App Store is a real pain as everyone knows.

Bad news guys and gals. Return to Mystery Island and Syberia have been pushed back. RTMI is now set for April and Syberia now for June. Here's hoping something new will come along and surprise us in the meantime.

Well, a new adventure game came out. But it was not the 1112, Episode 2 or Myst that I had expected. Instead it's a port of Ken and Roberta Williams' game for the Apple II: Mystery House.

Mystery House
Launch price: $5.99

@mattmanp -
Instead of making a new post every time, it would be nice of you to instead EDIT the one you first made - and add to that

The ability to edit is gone after 2 or 3 days (there's no limit during that time).

That limit is there, I think, because for most posts, editing an old one would go mostly unnoticed by people reading the thread and a new one is better.

I can add the new info though.

Someone on the Myst forums was given permission to post some Myst for iPhone screenshots. These are from the current round of beta testing. Here they are.

Nice to see the project is still alive and moving along.

No realmyst? lol I'm just kidding. I already have Wolf3d on my ipod touch, now I just need Myst to be complete. Seriously though, RealMyst would of been awesome too.
