I wouldn't be suprised if this is the end for LucasArts adventure games. Sadly...

Atleast Sierra's last real involvement with adventure games was a classic and not some cancellation press release.

Well, they've still got plenty of time to cancel the new Larry game...

Am I allowed to swear lots on your forum Marek?

It's sad to see something you love 'go to the dogs'...

remixor: Yeah, but that doesn't look like it's shaping up to be a real adventure game though. Gabriel Knight III: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned is a nice legacy for Sierra Studios to finish on.

"After careful evaluation of current market place realities and underlying economic considerations, we've decided that this was not the appropriate time to launch a graphic adventure on the PC"

Okay...But, the game was also only a few months away from being released. So, why cancel it NOW when they've already spent so much money on it? Maybe they think it won't live up to the first, like Full Throttle 2.

They won't release Sam and Max 2, yet they'll release shitty, poor selling games like RTX Red Rock and Wrath Unleashed.

If they didn't have the Star Wars games, they'd be screwed.

It's such a disgrace, they haven't even put it on their Lucasarts Headlines Bit, which makes me think they never really saw the game as much of a priority anyway.
This just isn't the same company that brought us all those amazing games.

Temporary finance suits are behind the steering wheel until someone replaces Simon Jeffery who left the company months ago.

This blows.

Completely took me by surprise. I was really anticipating this game. I hereby shun Lucas Arts games forever (seriously). At this point, it really does seem like the adventure game genre is drawing its last breath.

In the words of Guybrush Threepwood, "Well, darn."

I've been at school all day, so I just got a chance to read the news. Not the best news to come home to. I can see you guys have been talking quite a bit about it, though. As soon as I saw the news I just had to write a post about it on my site. I don't think I can really add anything to that, so I'll just share with you what I posted there:

Quote:
LucasArts, apparently noticing that non-Star Wars related titles were slipping past them, announced today they are canceling Sam & Max: Freelance Police. The game that would have been the sequel to LucasArts' classic 1993 adventure game was highly anticipated by adventure fans. The news is especially disappointing to the adventure game community considering the cancellation of Full Throttle: Hell on Wheels in August 2003. This marks the second adventure game LucasArts has canceled since Escape from Monkey Island was released in 2000.

I used to think that LucasArts was the one company still standing by its adventure games. After all, work on adventure games never really stopped at LucasArts. It may have slowed down toward the end of the '90s, but there was almost always something worth looking forward to. After Grim Fandango came Escape from Monkey Island. Then LucasArts announced Full Throttle: Hell on Wheels and Sam & Max: Freelance Police a few years later. "Wow," we all said. "Two classic adventure sequels at once. Things must really be picking up." LucasArts inspired the adventure community again. And why not? It was LucasArts that helped create the genre in the first. But today any last remnant of that dream died.

LucasArts may think it's doing itself a favor by churning out the same old Star Wars titles year after year in assembly line fashion. But LucasArts' real talent was never in its Star Wars games. It was in its original titles--Monkey Island, Maniac Mansion, Grim Fandango, Full Throttle. This is where the true talent of the people at LucasArts really shone brighter than anybody else in the business. It was in the adventure games they once lorded over like royal kings. Now, though, it seems LucasArts thinks they can turn their back on all of that. They say this is "not the appropriate time to launch a graphic adventure on the PC." They think that they're better off perpetuating a market filled with the same old, tired sci-fi shooters. And the saddest part of this whole story is they're probably right.

Mike
If you'll excuse, I have to go find somewhere to cry now.
