Adventure with ghost theme
 

Hi everyone!

For the purpose of a college dissertation, I ask to which and every one of you a recommendation.

I've to play as many adventure games with ghost (or other supernatural theme similar in tone and scope) theme as I can. Which game do you recommend?

I've played Scratches, Barrow Hill and Delaware St. John (so far, the worst) and I'm playing Amber (so far, the best)... And then?

Dark Fall The Journal and Dark fall Lights Out would be good choices.

Apparently The Lost Crown has its moments too (same writer as the Dark Fall series).

Phantasmagoria for sure. Maybe Ghost in the Sheet?

The Blackwell games - although it's a pretty different style.

Also, there's case 4 of the freeware Ben Jordan series which is pretty good.

Depending on how you consider "ghost" Faust: 7 Games of the Soul, Grim Fandango, and Reprobates might also fit into your dissertation.

In Faust, you trigger memories of the dead by touching objects, Grim Fandango takes place entirely in the afterlife, and in Reprobates the characters are snatched at the moment of death, believing themselves to be in a kind of purgatory.

In terms of the more broadly supernatural, Black Mirror and Darkness Within both deal with ancient family curses with elements of the supernatural. Anacapri: the Dream alternates between reality and a dream world with spirit guides and talking statues.

Blackstone Chronicles was great, one of my favourites! Very atmospheric if thats the right word. I am playing Ghost in the Sheet at the moment, its a humorous game, not scary but it is about a ghost. Dark Fall is excellent and for a few scares try Last half of Darkness, I enjoyed that one. I also liked the Dracula games, are vampires ghosts though? :)

King's Quest IV: The Perils of Rosella also has a memorable sequence involving a number of ghosts.

It's about the 19th century's ghost stories - Ann Radcliffe, Algernon Blackwood, E. T. A. Hoffmann, Edgar Allan Poe, Camillo Boito, Horace Walpole, C. R. Maturin, etc. - and their modern declinations in literature, in movies and in computer gaming: basically in all media that focus particularly on story and narrative.

Wow! Now there's an interesting topic, good luck with it :) Good authors, too; I'm a huge fand of E.T.A. Hoffmann and just finished reading Poe's Tales of Mystery and Imagination.
Can't contribute much to the topic, I'm afraid, since I haven't played many spooky adventures. I have encountered a ghost and some supernatural references in The Cameron Files: Loch Ness. Also, you might want to look into Necronomicon (first person horror adventure) and Dracula: Resurrection resp. Dracula: Last Sanctuary. Phantasmagoria is, I think, a must, and from your avatar and signature I'd guess you have already included the GK series :D

Poe's Tales of Mystery and Imagination is a masterpiece, particularly Berenice and Morella!

Argh. Those are not included in my copy. Are there different editions? It says "complete and unabridged" on the cover of my copy but apparently there are some stories missing :frusty:

I highly, highly recommend the Fatal Frame series for PlayStation 2. They're partly adventure games with a bit of what some would call action, I guess. They're also the scariest games you'll ever play. Guaranteed.

There's exploration and item collection which is very adventure game-ish. The action part comes in the games combat system, which is based on the camera your character has. When you take pictures of the ghosts, it does damage to them. It's not really combat, but I know some adventure gamers hate anything reflex-oriented... It's Japanese so I'm not sure how that would tie in to your thesis, although it does take place in the past...

Silent Hill 2 is a must if you haven't played that.
Don't let the action put you off, especially as you can set it to a minimum.

Did you see the Berenice sequence in The Dark Eye?

Since you are evidently not put off by dated first-person adventures (you are liking Amber), you should maybe try out Morpheus, a horror mystery game from ages past which takes place somewhere in the Poles (if I recall correctly) and deals with ghostly visions aboard an abandoned ship. I haven't played a very big part of it myself but I remember it made some heads turn at the time.
