Maniac Mansion / The Dig oddities
Here's a small tidbit from Maniac Mansion I discovered a long time ago but only documented recently.
A screenshot from the original version of the game: It's the Meteor Mess arcade game high-score screen. There are the initials of Dr. Fred, Nurse Edna, and Weird Ed Edison... Back up a minute. The letter S isn't exactly compatible with Edison, now is it? It would seem that when this screen was originally drawn, Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick wanted to use a different surname for the Edison clan. (My own guess is, it was Strange. How does Dr. Fred Strange sound?) But by the time the manual got printed, it had changed to Edison. Weird. In the enhanced version of MM the initials were corrected. And now a bit of fun The Dig stuff, which I only recently added to my site. LucasArts still maintains its old FTP server, but it hasn't put any new files on there (or cleaned it out, for that matter) in the past ten years. So I was prowling around on there one day, and guess what I found? A The Dig slideshow from Sean Clark's time--but of a still WIP beta version. It had some screenshots I'd previously seen in magazines, though not in their original digitized form. On the left is a screenshot of the "ghost" appearance, but the background is basically the same as it was in Brian Moriarty's version. The image on the right shows the finalized background. Same here: Moriarty-era background on the left, final background on the right. (Notice that the boulder has been added into the right screenshot; it also features a graphical glitch, as Low's shadow is colored white.) This is an image from a shot that was not featured in the final game. It's obviously the asteroid leaving Earth orbit, but this particular screenshot is not in the final cutscene. |

The ATMachine site is one of the best, it has tones of trivia information.
