question about KQ/SQ collections
I want to obtain the King's Quest and Space Quest collections, but am debating whether to hunt on ebay for previous collection releases or just get the Vivendi reissues. There have been some positive and negative comments about the reissues regarding compatibility, documentation, etc. What do you all think?
Thanks. |

I have the collections but you can't save properly on most of them without some tinkering.

GhostPirate, do you mean you have the original collections from 10 years or so ago or the 2006 collections? Thanks.

Huh... I've had no problems with saved games, in either collection.
To each their own! My two cents: for the cheap price, they're definitely worth it, warts and all. |

Hmm... definitely didn't have that problem. Is it a DosBox issue? |

The only save issue that I have heard of is with KQ5, but this has an easy work around, and I have been providing almost all the support for the new collections on VU's boards, which is about all of the support that VU provides for them.

Hi, Collector, would you mind putting the save-game work-around for KQ5 here? If it's not too involved, I mean. I'd really appreciate it, and I suspect many others would too.

Sure, when trying to save a game and you are presented with the "This directory/disk can hold no more saved games..." message, just click the "Change Directory" button and then simply click "OK" and it will then let you save your game. This has to be done only once per DOSBox session. It will remember it for the rest of the session.
It seems to be some quirk with the way KQ5 sees mounted disks inside DOSBox. I was once able to bypass the problem by installing the game to CSierra\KQ5 and mounting the C: drive as C:, but it can be dangerous to mount you root drive and is strongly advised against by the DOSBox devs. |
