Default Interview with Al Lowe

German(?) website G Wie Gorilla has a cool interview with legendary adventure game creator Al Lowe.
Point your browsers over here:
http://www.g-wie-gorilla.de/content/view/360/18/
Some highlights from the interview:
Quote:
Al Lowe: Well, I think many of them deserve a rating to limit them from children. I am not so sure if mature is the right word. Of course, I always thought that Larry should have an “I” rating.

Peter Clausen: “I”? What does that stand for?

Al Lowe: “Immature!” [laughs]
Funny.
Quote:
Peter Clausen: Speaking about actors, back in the day there were talks about a Larry movie featuring John Lovitz, right?

Al Lowe: I think they already made a Larry movie. It was called Deuce Bigalow. Rob Schneider basically took the Larry character and made a film out of it. I considered it high praise. [laughs]
A Leisure Suit Larry film with Rob Schneider would be pretty sweet!
15 years ago i would have thought Jack Nicholson would have been perfect for the part of Larry Laffer, but hes getting a bit old now.

Al also made the claim that before SPACE QUEST, there were no outer-space comedies.

He's forgetting PLANETFALL, which was not only designed by Steve Meretzky (and is one of the best games ever created), but which came out FOUR YEARS before SQ1...and which featured an "outer space janitor" as its main character!

I invented showering twice a day. Too bad I never took a patent on it, else I could sue everybody who shower twice a day.

He didn't really say that did he? He said :

Quote:
"So much of the game industry today is based on an “It’s either a hit or it’s out” mentality. We can’t do that and still expand the marketplace or develop new genres. If Sierra had said, “First, go to the software store and buy ten humorous games with sexual innuendo and then we’ll talk about producing your Leisure Suit Larry game…” well, of course it wouldn’t have happened."
I think Al deserves a lot of credit for popularising adventure games. Most people who owned computers back then were geeky males and the first Larry game was like the gateway drug that got them hooked onto other adventure games from Sierra and other studios.

Al is still one of my heroes for being the creator of the Larry series. If theres an adventure gaming hall of fame, he deserves to be there.

No, Al said:

"Al Lowe: I think they already made a Larry movie. It was called Deuce Bigalow. Rob Schneider basically took the Larry character and made a film out of it. I considered it high praise. [laughs]"

He is saying that any media involving a lonely guy trying to score MUST be absed on Larry.

That's ridiculous.

It was a joke. He wasn't serious about it. It's like when Ron Gilbert comments on Grumpy Gamer that Pirates of the Carribean stole his ideas from Monkey Island - except with less irony.

Al didn't invent the "lonely guy trying to score" gameplay anyway, and he's not ashamed let anyone know that. Check out his website where he notes that the first Leisure Suit Larry was a remake of Softporn Adventure.

I met him once, and I found him to be a really good guy, and very down to Earth. He's just got an off-beat sense of humor that you either get or you don't.

The interviews I have read always come across as though he thinks he is the father of adventure gaming....

If thats just his "sense of humour" then I'm glad somebody is laughing.

Al Lowe is a lot of fun. I love how accessible he makes himself for phone intervies. I talked to him a year or two ago and he was a very good interview.
