IGN's Top Ten Point & Click Adventures
http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/781/781665p1.html
Today IGN posted a "Top Ten" of the adventure gaming world in celebration of the SCUMM engine's 20th anniversary (Dont even ask why its filed under Xbox360 - that makes no bloody sense). I found the list to be a bit odd myself.... King's Quest 5 takes the lead in representing the entire KQ universe... apparently they don't remember the damned owl... Personally, I think KQ6 with it's full soundtrack, speech, and high res character portraits (coupled with a story that includes multiple endings) is by far a superior game. Having Grim Fandango and The Longest Journey share top honors may lead to a few grumbles around here as well. And yes, before anyone says it, obviously this is IGN - I'm not saying they have a definitive opinion or anything - but it's worth looking at anyways. |

It's all about personal opinions. In my opinion Monkey Island 2, Grim Fandango, Sam&Max and Day of The Tentacle belongs in top 10 list.
However, I myself would never include LSL on that list. I don't see how that game is better than for example Broken Sword 1 or Monkey Island 1 and so many others. Feels like it's earned it's spot there because, you know, it's Larry and it's old classic. But I don't see how it'd beat other top games on genre. For example how is the story, graphics, gameplay, even atmosphere and everything better than games such as Broken Sword and Gabriel Knights? It's beyond me, but as I said it's personal opinion and can't argue about those.

I think it's an OK-list for a mainstream gaming site. Though TLJ as the 2nd best adventure of all times looks a bit odd..

I second that. Reinvented? What exactly did it reinvent? An all new way of point and clicking at a screen? Mature story - as if you didn't get that with Gabriel Knight and numorous other AGs.
TLJ 2nd and Broken Sword 1 not even on the list? "Voice acting way ahead of its time" - don't know whether to laugh or cry. Did they not play Metal gear Solid, Broken Sword, HELL even Spyro the Dragon has better voice acting. I'll bet any money this list was a specific person's personal favourite top 10. |

Decent list, although 10, 8, and 7 were kinda strange choices.
Don't hava a problem with Broken Sword not being up there and TLJ should have been number 10 instead of 2. And no adventure list is complete without at least ONE bloody Gabriel Knight game!

Well, MGS isn't an adventure game and I'm guessing the writer talked especially about adventure games. TLJ did have excellent voice acting, a very remarkable job from a then unknown Norwegian developer.

Lists are like butts: Everyone wishes to have one.
No, wait, that's not quite correct, is it?

But even so...saying the voice acting was "way ahead of it's time" makes absolutely no sense what so ever. Voice acting isn't a progressive thing like graphics, it's only as good or bad as the actors who are providing it. I suppose at a stretch you could argue that whatever adventure game was first to use voice acting was way ahead of it's time, but in any other context the statement is meaningless.

Well, a lot of early voice acting was truly crappy, featuring either company staffers or Z-list actors. But yeah, there were many games (even adventure games) predating TLJ that had competent or even excellent voice acting (TLE, with its painstakingly authentic accents comes to mind).

Shadowgate???????????????????
EDIT: also strange is the choice for Police Quest 2, much inferior to the first and third parts. Well, ok, and better than the fourth. Last edited by Risingson; 04-19-2007 at 01:20 PM. |

I mean, that eventhough LSL in my opinion doesn't belong even anywhere in that list, I'm sure there's a lot of people who sees it just. Therefore there are no right and wrong answers here, eventhough it's always fun to critisize and all that. I just said it, so that anyone wouldn't put me off for saying LSL doesn't belong there. XD As for The Longest Journey voice acting ( English) -- I liked it very much too, although it didn't stand out or anything from Broken Sword and Grim Fandango or even Curse of the Monkey Island. Nevertheless, it was quality IMO. Especially April's actor in TLJ was great. And yes, it's a disgrace this list lacks Gabriel Knight games! I also reckon that Fate of Atlantis should be up there.

In the remake of KQ2 there is apparently an added scene with a dead owl...lol Ultimately the game just wasn't as fun for me as KQ6 with all it's strong fairy tale elements, magic, genies, nonsense, and the over all love story. Watching graham and his owl try to figure out why their castle just up and dissapeared just isn't as engrossing to me. Quote:
I am all for just giving the number 2 or 3 spot to SIERRA QUEST GAMES in general. How is PQ2 any better then LSL or how is KQ5 better then either of them... the only difference lies in your particular taste.. do you like sci fi? cops? fantasy? soft-core porn/comedy? I might as well throw in there that I completely disagree with MI2 being the pinnacle of that series. There were more illogical puzzles and backtracking then any of the other games (although I'm omitting MI4 as I never play it for more then 20 minutes without getting bored). You know, between this list, and every other topic that crosses these boards about the best/worst games... I'd have to say that TLJ is easily to most controversial game on the boards. More so then any other game, it has the highest love/hate relationship ratio from what I've seen. If I remember correctly, back when there were two polls about best/worst game of the year it made both lists...lol. |

English of course.
I have no idea what the game sounds in other languages, but English was very nicely done. Like Tower of Power said, especially April's voice was indeed great.

I don't rate Shadowgate at all...
Was very sad to not see a single Gabriel Knight game or one of the original Broken Swords It was good to see Police Quest getting a mention - just finished Police Quest III again for the umpteenth time! I did like TLJ though - very good It's a shame a few other games I thought were good weren't there like Dreamweb and Simon the Sorcerer - both in my Top 10... |

I agree with the top, but yeah why not KQ6?
I don't think I completely agree with the list, but I haven't played all the games that were listed either.

Eh, I could see Shadowgate. I could never get into the head of someone who considered TLJ to be the 2nd greatest adventure game of all time though.

It's not standard point and click but I think a spot should also be reserved for some Tex Murphy game, arguably The Pandora Directive. And yeah, Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers is worthy of a place too as is Discworld: Noir as far as I'm concerned. Still, there are many games in that list that never hit my hard drive (namely the Sierra ones mostly) so I cannot safely say I disagree with the ones that made it there.
At least I like what I see on the thumbnail with the "1" figure on it.
