Just about everything... I like the environment, story, how one moves around and uses items etc.

Faust is often mentioned together with Sanitarium, for its mysterious story-telling and use of adult themes.
While I definitely wouldn't call Sanitarium a horror game (its purpose was not really to scare), it was rather dark, and so you might find similar games by browsing these threads: [1], [2], [3].

This thread only serves to once again make me curse the inavailability of Sanitarium for the past ten years in the Netherlands.

Sanitarium was the last adventure game I completed. Very strange game indeed. But if you liked Sanitarium you might like Planescape Torment. It's an RPG but it's strong on story.

Bad Mojo has the same weirdness to it and it can be found on the net. Not everybody liked the controls though. If you're after something more towards horror (without action), you might want to try Scratches and/or Barrow Hill. There are also Dark Fall - Lights Out and The Journal - I found them a bit slow (The Journal slightly better). Happy Hunting!

Space Quest is like Sanitarium? That's quite a stretch. Same with the other games you mentioned.
