Kaptain Brawe *New Upcoming Adventure*

Anyone heard of this upcoming game? I actually just stumbled by the website by accident (typo) and came about something that I actually am pretty impressed with. The game features a point-and-click gameplay in a 2D world ala Monkey Island 3. There is actually a demo out currently out that was enjoyable and has left me wanting for more.Seems as though the game isn't due to hit retail until Christmas this year, so we have a wait, but I though I would share the demo with you all.

Oh and here are a few screens:

I played the demo a couple of weeks ago and it looked pretty cool. However, the interface didn't work properly, and I was unable to interact with more than half of the objects in the game. Needless to say, it wasn't much fun.

TangentBlack 03-15-2007 01:07 PM

I don't recall having any glitches or bugs throughout the entire demo. That's unusual.....hopefully they will get that fixed for the main game.

The developer has posted about this a few times here (albeit in the Underground section :)). But I remember her saying she would eventually charge a bit for future episodes.

I also played the demo a while ago - Had no problems with the interface or anything.

I enjoyed it quite a lot. Lovely 2D cartoonish grafics that reminded me of Curse of Monkey Island. And the same sort of wacky characters and humour as those Lucasart games from last decade.

I really look forward to the release of the full game - but sadly these kind of independent game projects have a tendency to be abandoned by the developer before they're finished.

Amazing graphics! And new screens too!

No... she seems pretty tenacious (I get that impression reading the threads I linked to). :) It may possibly be slow going (because she's the only one doing it) but I think it'll get done.

JohnGreenArt 03-15-2007 06:15 PM

Actually, I don't know many details, but the game was picked up by a publisher. Instead of being episodic it will be one big game.

TangentBlack 03-15-2007 07:26 PM

Yeah, Green is right. She confirmed that on her website. The game would come out in one whole version with a small charge (she suggested perhaps $10-15) for the full game. She claims that the game could be about 10-12 hours long, which is pretty decent for an adventure game, not to mention an indie one.

SLabyrinth 03-16-2007 03:36 AM

Thanks for posting this; this is now another indie game I'm really excited about! :)

Hysteria 03-21-2007 03:17 PM

Not my cup of tea.

Nautilus 03-21-2007 03:47 PM

beautiful graphics. Downloading the demo...

Nautilus 03-23-2007 05:10 PM

Beautiful game, but there is no story nor voice on the demo. That's a pitty, because the game looks promissing.

TangentBlack 03-23-2007 07:04 PM

Yeah, that is a very common pitfall for indie games. Voices can add a lot to a game but sometimes, if done poorly, can detract from it too. Maybe they realized that?

Crapstorm 03-24-2007 03:44 AM

I imagine the cost of hiring good quality voice actors is very high.

TangentBlack 03-24-2007 06:11 AM

Exactly, which is probably why they chose no voice acting instead of poor acting.

damirko 03-24-2007 06:58 AM

Any ETA on its release date?

TangentBlack 03-24-2007 08:46 AM

Winter is what I hear from the site.

The demo would require only two dubbing actors. It's not very expensive (at least not here in Brasil). Anyway, it's good to see a new adventure in the market.

JohnGreenArt 03-25-2007 04:19 PM

The demo was made LONG before the game had a publisher or any sort of budget. I'm sure the final game will be far more refined than the demo.

Melanie68 03-25-2007 04:21 PM

I can't seem to find a news item on her site talking about a publisher. Could someone provide a more specific link and some details?

Kaptain Brawe 03-26-2007 09:03 AM

Hi everyone, nice to be back here.

Been keeping a low profile lately, as John already mentioned, the game will be released as a full product, so, I am holding back on the information as much as possible.

First of all, thank you for your kind comments, and I am glad you enjoyed the demo. Thank you!

Second, as John mentioned the publisher, there were quite a few involved, but I kept a firm grasp on terms and IP licencing, causing many to drop out of the deal. I am not sorry, because I want to make it just like I want it. No outside interference.

There were also some issues about deadlines, the lenght of the game (that's why I went the "complete game" route), but I realized that the product had to be rushed to meet the deadlines.

Now, with no signed deal, there is no budget. Therefore no voices.

As Nautilus stated, and I am a firm believer on this issue, GOOD voice work can elevate Kaptain Brawe alot. However, BAD even MEDIOCRE voices will do more damage that I care to risk (Runaway anyone?). Alot of work has been put into graphics, story and dialogue and I don't want to spoil on a rather trivial thing like voice overs. Instead, I am using music to set the mood, much like the silent movies did (after all, KB is set on a turn of 20th century).

The game is set to be released around Christmass 2007, if not, then on New Years Eve. It's hard for me to compete against "big boys" in the holiday season, but you can expect it around that time.

More on the publishers issue:

I've had offers for a complete distribution of the game based solely on the demo itself. If I recall they offered 32 world countries including 6-7 language regions.

When I have a complete game at disposal, I don't think it will be hard to sign a deal, if not only through game portals and my website ofcourse.

That's about it. If you are interested in progress, what was meant to be a first episode is now pretty much finished, with all the characters, locations, puzzles and music. Animations are not fully done yet, I've been experimenting with a more productive pipeline, which should lead in second part being finished rather quickly (hopefully).

Well, that's about it.

Again, thank you for your support.

Stay sharp and Be Brawe!

KB.

Good to hear that you're still around...
Looking forward to the game :)

TangentBlack 03-26-2007 07:27 PM

Aha, I thought I might be able to lure you out of hiding if I created a Kpt. Brawe topic. I am glad to see your are alive and kicking; we all are excited about the project!

jojo_jinx 03-31-2007 09:40 AM

Interesting. :) Backgrounds look pretty but some of the character animation didn't look very smooth. Took me a little while to get used to the controls but that's maybe partly because I just am not used to that kind of control system.

5abanja 04-01-2007 09:15 AM

Ok, so you're telling me that you developed every aspect of the game by yourself?! Wow, kudos to you girl. Keep up the excellent work, and don't let any publisher tell you what to do!

Oh, I loved the demo!

I hope to hear some more news on this game soon. I can't see another game with great potential go down the drain.

damirko 09-18-2007 10:52 AM

I hope too that game is still on track for christmas release.

It would be such a shame for an adventure with that much style to just vanish...

Hope we get an update on it's status soon

The game has finally been released! You can download the demo and buy the game on GamersGate.com
