Since you haven't gotten an answer, it might be time to actually go to the source and ask the publisher, Lighthouse Interactive, what kind (if any) copy protection they use.

I just got Wintersun yesterday and can report that the lighthouse version does not have starforce. I only played it for a few minutes, but it seems like a good game thus far. The only downside that I see so far is the bad voice-acting for the main character. It sounds like he is on depressants or something.
