windows vista compatibility?
i was thinking of upgrading my windows XP to vista, but one thing is holding me back.
I have a lot of trouble playing my old favourites on XP, been as they were made in the glory days of 95, 98 etc... i was wondering if microsoft made any special measurements to vista to ensure backwards compatibility with the older games, or just turned their back as usual? i have researched this and could not find anything... thanks!

There were a few threads on the question of upgrading to Vista, with some interesting links [1,2], as well as reports of games not working with it [3,4].

I'd recommend a dual boot so you can still fiddle around in Vista without missing the oppertunity to play your "old" games. I wonder how DOSBOX performs under Vista...

VirtualPC is now free for Windows, so you could also use that to boot Win98 or the like inside a VM to play. |

In my opinion, Windows XP is now much more capable of handling digital antiques (classic games) than it was several years ago. And from my experience so far, the latest versions of DOSBox and ScummVM are now extremely stable on XP. So why upgrade to Vista now?
Besides, when it comes to specialized software, like video editors that I use at work for instance, nothing is perfectly stable on Vista at this point, so we're sticking to XP. For now. |
