Playstation 1 "pure" adventure games that I know of:

Ark of Time
Broken Sword 1
Broken Sword 2
The City of Lost Children
D
Discworld
Discworld II
Discworld Noir
Dracula Resurrection
Dracula 2: The Last Sanctionary
Echo Night
Echo Night 2 (may have been released in Japan only)
Hellnight (Dark Messiah) (may have some action elements but basically an AG)
Juggernaut
The Last Report (early Microids game released as "Evidence" for the PC)
The Messenger (Louvre)
Myst
Myst 2: Riven
Psychic Detective
Silverload
The X-Files Game

+ a lot of Cryo's adventure games, such as Atlantis: The Lost Tales, Egypt etc.

For the PS2:

Atlantis 3
Broken Sword 3
Echo Night: Beyond
Escape from Monkey Island
Glass Rose (IMO better than most reviews will have you believe)
Myst 3
Myst 4
Shadow of Memories
SOS: The Final Escape (Disaster Report in the US)
Syberia
Syberia 2

And there are a lot of great games for both PSX and PS2 that are generally enjoyed by adventure gamers despite containing some action elements:

The Clock Tower series
Haunting Ground
ICO
Shadow of the Colossus
Kuon
Obscure
All three Project Zero games (Fatal Frame in the US)
The four Silent Hill games

"Shadow Of The Colossus", what a beautiful game that was! Listen to other guys, get it!!! And yeah, the combat isn't some combo-based fighting but simple stabbing. I also loved the music in that game and it's kind of cool that you can use the right analog-stick to manipulate the camera view during cinematics.

I'd reccomend for the PS2:

Escape from Monkey Island, really colourful, nice graphics.
Shadow of the Colossus, amazing game, as stated above the fighting isn't exactly fighting...it's more, finding out what you have to do to win.
Tomb Raider Legend, quite a bit of action, but has some puzzles that'll keep you thinking.
I would also reccomend Clock Tower 3 and Haunting Ground. Both are similar, you don't fight but you can die. You have to find objects to use against your assilants or find hiding spots. Really good games.
There's Da Vinci Code also. I'm not too fond of games made after movies, but in this case it could have been made after the book also. I've not played it, but I've heard it is good. And the book was brilliant, so I'd give that a go sometime.
There's also the Resident Evil and Silent Hill series. Both are action oriented, and pretty gory, but they do have some mind numbing puzzles to keep you busy, and fantastic storylines.

I hope this helps.

It might be hard to track down but Disaster Report is a fun adventuring type of game. It takes place during an earthquake and you are a reporter right in the middle of the action. Although there are a few flaws, loading times is one, its very original and there are many puzzles to solve and due to the context most are very satisfying.

Beyond Good and Evil is great, but a little too easy, you just press X and the puzzles pretty much solves themselves. But it's defenitly worth getting, nice atmosphere and characters. Tomb Raider: Anniversary is pretty good also, it's a remake of the first Tomb Raider. The action is pretty poor, but the game has it's moments. Personally I like kinda like Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness too, even though it's terrible, but I wouldn't recommend you buying it, hehe.

Okami should be a lenghty and good adventure,I haven't played it myfself. But you probably have to like the diffent graphic style to like the game.

PS2 is really strong on platform adventures and have many exclusives in that area. Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank and Sly 2 are worth picking up.

How do you define adventure games anyway ?
Not sure you would classed Okami as an adventure game , it's an action RPG. It's very action orientated and you have to fight bosses in each level.
