Excellent news

It's amazing how popular the Nancy Drew series is. Her Interactive should be really proud. They're really a wonderful company. I've always wanted them to expand their line to include some new and original adventure titles.

You're right about the Nancy Drew - my sister loves them - it's really encouraging for the genre.

The greatest thing about the series is innocents asking shopkeeps for Hardy Drew and the Nancy Boys

Ummm... Nancy Drew?

What...?

Nancy Drew is an incredibly popular series. I don't find it terribly surprising. Especially when I go to EBGames or GameStop you often find copies of the more recent Nancy Drew games whereas other PC Adventures are often lacking (although I've seen some).

I just went to EB Games on the 20th to see if they had the new Agatha Christie. The clerk looked it up and saw it was supposed to be released on the 21st and said I should preorder but when he tried entering it in the computer - it was too late to do that. He told me with 'obscure' games like that, I need to preorder as soon as I hear of the game to make sure it gets shipped to them. I have other avenues to get the game, I just thought I would see if it was there.

What surprises me more is what is not on the list.

Scratches
Still Life
Paradise (Although I think it was a horrible game)

This is a list of the recent top sellers, not the all-time best-selling PC games. I think that this list means very little regarding the popularity of adventure games overall.

I've never played a Nancy Drew game, but I think that it fits very well in the "smart girl gamer" niche.

There are at least 4 adventures every week in Amazon top list.

That's not a surprise. According to ESA:
BEST-SELLING COMPUTER GAME SUPER GENRES BY UNITS SOLD, 2005
Adventure: 5.8%

Paradise was in April 2006's top list:
7. Dreamfall: The Longest Journey
27. The Longest Journey
70. Paradise
71. Myst IV: Revelation

Having four in the top one hundred consistently still doesn't mean much in terms of popularity. It's not like there are thousands of entirely different genres out there to to compete against and "adventure" is good enough to snag a whopping 5% of that coveted piece of the sales pie. Now, if those four were in the top ten or twenty on a consistent basis, then I'd agree that adventure games (as we define them) are gaining some serious notoriety. But out of a hundred, and probably mostly toward the bottom? Nah, I kind of doubt it. They're doing just "okay" for now, if that.

Nancy Drew, Myst, Nancy Drew, Myst.. Where are the good news? :)

GombeTo 11-22-2006 05:04 AM

I wonder that, too :)
