Broken Sword 2, worth a try?

Is Broken Sword 2 worth a try?
Im completing first one, and im up to complete 3 and 4 too.
But after reading AG review about Smoking Mirror.. :shifty: .. Should I give a try or it's just waste of time and i could skip it?
Im thinking mainly on story, IF i should skip BS2, would i miss something in BS3?

Owskie 09-10-2006 10:34 AM

i really really enjoyed it, i dont know what the reviewer or any of the haters were on, but.. yea, i would definatley give it a go..

then again, when i played it.. i was really young..

MadTricks 09-10-2006 10:36 AM

hmm...as a matter of fact i have seen many players on AG who are saying that they loved it...

jannar85 09-10-2006 10:37 AM

I loved it!:D

Cellardoor 09-10-2006 10:43 AM

What a funny coincidence, I was about to post the same question yesterday.

Having played most LucasArts/Sierra games but never a Revolution game before, I figured it was time I'd give the Broken Sword series a try. I finished BS1 last week. While I did sort of enjoy playing SotT, I can't really say I was impressed. I didn't care much for the characters and the humor, the wacky cartoon style mixed with a serious story didn't work IMO, and the plot itself was hardly original.

So, like MadTricks, I too would like some advice - should I stay away from the other games in the series, or would you say there has been improvement over the years?

Hammerite 09-10-2006 10:48 AM

broken sword rules.
the second, IMO, is the disappointment

My opinion of Broken Sword as a whole has changed a bit over time. The first one is still a very respectable title to me, though not as amazing as I once I thought it was. I remember being turned off by Broken Sword II's humor. It's strangely immature at the weirdest times. Other than that, it might be good enough for you.

Hammerite 09-10-2006 10:53 AM

in answer to yr other question, it relates in no way to number 3 (number 4 perhaps, but dont get yr hopes up)

MadTricks 09-10-2006 10:54 AM

:)
Seems like me and CellarDoor should give a try.

btw, is this long game?...i mean in hours, to complete.
and..as i read about the puzzles, they had to be brainless...so are they like "extremly-hard-brainless" or "ultra-easy-brainless"?

I Love Cookiemonster 09-10-2006 10:58 AM

Just try it. what's the worst that can happen? It's isn't as good as the first but enjoyable anyway.

aries323 09-10-2006 11:53 AM

HI :)

I found Broken Sword 2 a very fun game to play --- it still has the cartoony look I like for most adventure games. As you probably can tell, I'm not much for the whole 'realistic thing' going on in the gaming industry these days.

However, I also sort of miss the cinematics adventures of the 1990s ----

In answer to your question - yes, you should definitely play broken sword 2 :)

U won't miss anything in BS 3, but BS 2 is really beautiful game, it's worth playing it!!!!!

I'm actually also about to complete Broken Sword The Shadow of the Templars. Well I think I'm half way through it. I've played B.S3 earlier and felt like playing all of the games before number 4 comes out. I've got B.S2 waiting on a shelf.

My feeling of B.S (1) is that it's a great adventure game with doable puzzles: The only time I've been stuck so far was by the goat.
Spoiler:
I'm terrible when it comes to anything that resembles action

eriq 09-10-2006 12:28 PM

a classic!

AFGNCAAP 09-10-2006 04:01 PM

You seem to be determined to try it anyway, so go on. But I agree with the AG review rating. BS2 seemed hastily put together, and was the part of the trilogy I enjoyed the least, by far.

I would discourage Cellardoor, though, beacuse if his main gripe with BS1 was that it was "the wacky cartoon style mixed with a serious story", then BS2 is much more oddball. Characters and situations you encounter are almost random, ranging from ghosts you don't even need to interact with, to film crews in the middle of nowhere.

One thing over which I strongly disagree with the reviewer are the puzzles: he calls them "brainless", I think they were the opposite... perhaps not hard, but needlessly convoluted. I found BS1 puzzles for the most part fantastic and memorable, if on the easy side. In contrast, while playing BS2 at one point I started to keep walkthrough in handy to get it over with sooner.

I am so thrilled that the games that gave me a passion for the gender will be giving another chapter. Broken Sword, Simon, Sam & Max. Pinch me.

RLacey 09-10-2006 04:14 PM

I thoroughly enjoyed Broken Sword 2... for the handful of hours that it took to complete. I remember it being an incredibly easy game - I literally got stuck at one point if I remember correctly, and that was when I'd missed a hotspot - but it was perfectly entertaining. Not as good as the first game (which I think is overrated but still very good), but a lot better than the third game, which, looking back on it, is really rather weak.

Captain Blondebeard 09-10-2006 04:19 PM

I enjoyed it. Great voice acting and game play. Nice puzzles. I doesnt hold up to the first but I is a nice game that should be played.

Aj_ 09-10-2006 06:00 PM

For me Broken Sword 2 was a waste of time, both on a gameplay level and a story/character level, only two scenes were memorable for me. It's not important to play it before Broken Sword 3.

Spricee 09-10-2006 06:31 PM

Definitely worth it for me.

If you liked BS1, go for it, if not, then the 2nd one is exactly the same style.
