PC Gamer US: Sam & Max 2 a "Top 10 Game of 2004"

PC Gamer US has named Sam and Max Freelance Police one of its Top Ten Games of 2004!

The games aren't numbered, so it's not above or below any others.

It features a short interview with Mike Stemmle, as well as a rather nice 3D shot of the dynamic duo and a picture of their office.

Wow. That's kind of impressive given that this year will be seeing such heavy hitters as Doom 3 and Half Life 2. I didn't realize game critics liked Sam & Max THAT much. I guess adventure games really are making a comeback.

power ups? i hope they mean power ups in the mine games

sam and max + pure adventure = kicks ass fun
sam and max + power ups + pure adventure = more kick ass fun
sam and max + action - pure adventure = affraid :frown:

DustCropper 01-14-2004 05:37 PM

Nice!! Sam & Max looks great.

Jake 01-14-2004 06:05 PM

Everyone loves Sam & Max!

They showed a piece of concept art for the "Jump Jive and Flail" rhythm game during a panel at this years San Diego ComicCon (The "Pencils vs Polygons" panel that both Mike Stemmle and Steve Purcell were members of). Nothing much, just a picture of Max all dressed up for the dance off, wearing a light blue parka/snowboarding jacket, matching beanie, and what looked like giant DJ headphones.

Skinkie 01-14-2004 07:37 PM

More downloadable cases? As long as I don't have to pay extra, sounds awesome.

BacardiJim 01-14-2004 08:12 PM

Unless I misunderstand, the "mini-games" are along the line of the travel Bingo set you could purchase in the original game. Except longer/deeper.

Moosferatu 01-14-2004 09:06 PM

It is quite impressive how much better the 3d models look now. Very nice! 8-)

Garyos 01-14-2004 10:28 PM

"BACK-a-rat"??????? :o

This sounds... Stupendous... Several cases, incredible humour, unlockable bonuses, additional content.... This just flew to the top of my hype-o-meter.

nordic_guy 01-14-2004 11:02 PM

Sounds great! The office looks nice, I hope the rest of the world looks just as good. 19 mini-games, great! But the real treat lies (hopefully) in the adventure itself. :9~

syntheticgerbil 01-14-2004 11:43 PM

That power up thing confused me. Who needs a power-up in an adventure game?

mycroft 01-14-2004 11:51 PM

Under-powered people.

Bad joke.

But I guess they're for the mini-games, whose structure I've not quite made out. The Rink-a-Dink-a-Doom sounds like a good one though. In any case, the downloadable cases really seems like an interesting approach. Oh and pretty office there.

Swordmaster 01-15-2004 04:07 AM

I liked Mike's comment about irony. :P

Maybe you should check on your economy books and see how capitalism works.

Tamara 01-15-2004 09:10 AM

I haven't looked forward to a game like this for ages. * The power-ups thing is weird, but they've outright said this is a pointy clicky adventure, so ....

And extra downloadable cases sounds awesome! *D

* well technically since BS3. But Shhhh.

Draco2.5 01-15-2004 09:44 AM

downloadable extras!?

I don't know why but I just can't stop drooling.

yup. like I said, even hardcore gamers remember the good old days of adventure games. Everyone loved Sierra and LucasArts games!

Sounds like some sort of betting/race minigame. But who knows?

*bounce up and down in anticipation*

Jake 01-15-2004 10:48 AM

My guess is it's a variant on baccarat. So betting, yes, racing, no? But maybe youre right. Only the actual game will tell.

bigjko 01-15-2004 11:14 AM

The power-ups are quite obviously tied to the mini-games, so no confusion there. The game was already at the top of my hype-o-meter, but it just the scales, ladies and gentlemen!

Intrepid Homoludens 01-15-2004 07:27 PM

:D  :9~ OMG, it all looks like some great big messy fun!!!

nordic_guy 01-15-2004 11:38 PM

BTW, S&M2 was on the list of the 20 most anticapated games in 2004 in Norways biggest newspaper, too.
Just some random trivia for you, there.

My friend gets a PC Gamer subscription and when I saw this article at his house the other day, I couldn't believe it. He too is an old-time adventure fan. It's a good thing this game is getting press, because it'll need it. I'm fairly confident that if LEC does a good job this game will have large-scale appeal--much moreso than most modern adventures--but it's going to need some good marketing and press to ensure that people actually buy it in the first place.

Tanukitsune 01-16-2004 01:19 AM

EEP!
I don't know if I should be happy or scared stiff, this is way off the scale in the Hypo-meter!
This game will be either the best game ever or the Daitakana of adventure games... :shifty:

Wajus 01-16-2004 02:00 AM

Come on :) There's Steve Purcell, Michael Stemmle, And Bill&Nick as Sam&Max again working on the game so I'm more than optimistic that it'll be a racket hit! And the idea of downloadable cases is brilliant. And as far as I am concerned such missions in other games/genres are usually free...

And I can confirm that in Poland Freeelance Police is also gaining mainstream recognition. Biggest Polish computer games magazine CD-Action has chosen S&M among 50 of the most promising titles of 2004. There was no ranking or anything, just some notes - to paraphrase: even though they don't know nothing about this game yet they are really anticipating it.

That's EXACTLY the problem! It sounds too good to be true!!

MeddlingMonk 01-16-2004 11:11 PM

People said that about Peter Jackson, too...

dave_minall 01-17-2004 03:31 AM

S&M2 looks very good indeed :9~ . this is just the kick that point and click games need to be pushed into the new millennium. who knows? it may catch on and Monkey island 5 may (if it is made) be a point and click. HAZAA :)

wilco 01-17-2004 04:06 AM

I still wonder why there's almost none in-game footage or screenshots, maybe they are trying an half-life 2 effect with a huge video comming out that will weeks to recover from the jaw-dropping effect, or maybe they will cancel it like Full Throtle2 (Bur really don't belive in this one)

Just one more info: here in Portugal it's in the top10 of the most anticipated of 2004 in the major magazine.

Erwin_Br 01-17-2004 07:25 AM

Hmm, the game seems to be getting a lot of attention in Dutch magazines too, this week. And all very positive of course.

Marek 01-17-2004 07:38 AM

Which Dutch magazines?!?! Must. Go. Get.

syntheticgerbil 01-17-2004 07:58 AM

Now let's all hope no one gets carried away and leads the furry pals into the hell of extensive merchandising.

I hate Garfield.

Swordmaster 01-17-2004 08:08 AM

"And here's a cuddly, officially-licensed toy of me to stick in a car window! Isn't it cute? Look-- it's wearing the skin of a Garfield doll."

5abanja 01-17-2004 11:53 AM

I am REALLY happy that they changed some facial problems in the main Characters. like the white things in their eyes, and Max's teeth are not sharp as in the first trailer.

CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THE OFFICIAL WEBSITE!!!

davez82 01-19-2004 05:51 PM

are the backgrounds cg? or polygonal like in bs3
