I would have to go for Chepito from Grim Fandango... I still get that dumb song stuck in my head sometimes... "hide it under some seaweed? NO!! let it shine let it shine etc..."
But I also liked Potts in Steel Sky... what an anal (place expletive here). Spoiler: |

Broken Sword III:
I wouldn't call her a favourite, but this woman in curlers sitting outside/managing a 'pissoir' is hilarious.

I'm rather fond of Elaine Marley, myself.
Glottis is definitely up there, though. |

He's great, if only for: "I thought about RE-DECORATING... but I couldn't be ARSED!" Well, it works better on the talkie version. I'm quite partial to Sophia on FoA now, but that's mainly because I've just replayed it. The interaction between her and Indy is a lot of fun, and the designers have gone to great lengths to give you something contextually relevant to your current situation to discuss - usually completely optional. You do get to 'play' her at odd points though, so perhaps she's not a true NPC! |

He would also be in a villain thread, but it would have to be Von Glower.

Not like them!

Does this have to be limited to adventures? Because my favorite NPC is from an RPG.

Kenny, the balloon-animal guy from LSL7.
Kenny: "I make balloon animals for all the children aboard the ship!" Larry: "Uh, I haven't seen any children on this ship..." Kenny: "Of course not, silly! This game is TOOOOO filthy for children!!" the guy just cracked me up. Plus, the different animations of him making his "animals" fight each other, the way he "held" one balloon animal in order to make another one...goofy as hell, makes me laugh just visualizing all of it. In a non-humorous game, I'd say Nemesis from Zork: Nemesis. He was just sooooo creepy. |

Cedric the owl from King's Quest 5. "Look Graham, there's a boat here...maybe we can uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse it!"
Kidding. In all seriousness, I think that the Gabriel Knight games have some of the best developed and interesting supporing characters. Grace in GK1 (you can't play as her), Detective Mosley, Gerde, Wolfgang, Emilio and Von Glower are a few of my favorites. |

Yeah, Mosley from GK1 stood out to me immediately. (In fact, I'm immediately changing my avatar in honor of him - too many Gabriel's and no love for the real hero of the first game)
Glottis and Cortez from TLJ also were very cool and original characters. Wonkers from Dreamfall may be the best side character character with so little screentime and purpose in the game. Just kind of a small background character for the very beginning of the game, and yet he makes such an impact. I wish we could play a game with Wonkers before leaving him. |
