Default The Gabriel Knight games

This is my biggest regret. I don't own GK 1 and 2. I have heard that they are both playable on Win XP. Is that right?

Does anyone want to trade?

GK1 is playable in XP with a lot of work and tweaking and it still doesn't play correctly or smoothly. It also has fits saving and restoring games. It is, after all, a DOS game and even the Win95 version plays in a DOS shell.

GK2 plays just fine in WinXP if you use Compatibility Mode.

Hmmm.. I have the windows version of GK1, but it still won't work on XP (I have to disable the music to get it to work.)

Does anyone have any idea how to get it to work?
I wish ScummVM will support GK1 soon though.

** edit **
GK1 + GK2 is playable on DosBox. But I have never understood DosBox..

GK1 runs just great on DOSBox. If you don't want to mess with DOSBox, here is a setup walkthrough for playing GK1 on XP.

[EDIT: I'm pretty sure that this setup is for the Win95 version of the game. I can't vouch for its working for the DOS version.]

yep, dosbox is the way to go. i have confirmed playing the entire game using that method on XP Pro. no bugs at all... you can save and restore anywhere you like and several times (there is still a limit, but that is just the way it is).

There is really nothing to understand about DOSBox. Even if you've never used DOS before, as long as you understand how to mount drives within DB it is much simpler than VDMSound or MoSlo or any other compatibility program.

ScummVM probably never will support the GK games. FreeSCI might support it in the distant future though.

Uhm, the problem comes in when you have to change stuff in the configuration of DOSBox. I can't seem to get it right either

I played GK1 the a few weeks ago (I run Windows ME) and almost finished it, I'm SO extremely close to the end but now the game is buggy and it crashes "oops, we didn't expect you to do that".

When I want to run GK2 windows install it gives me a divide by 0 error. Can any one help me with this? I can install the dos version but then my sound doesn't work and you simply can't play the game without sound.

What are you doing when you get the divide by 0 error? Is it before you install, during install, etc.?

Also, what version of GK2 do you have?

I have heard all sorts of horror stories from people trying to get games running on ME. I have run both versions of GK2 on XP but that doesn't necessarily help you.

When you play the DOS version, what's the problem with the sound? If you're getting a message that your sound card can't be initialized, the GoSierra patch may help.

the error occurs when I start the setup, when I click 'install' (for the windows install). DOS version - the sounds starts out fine and then all of a sudden - gone. No error, no nothing, just gone.

I don't know what version it is tho :/

I should just delete ME and get a better windows? *sigh*

http://jhunix.hcf.jhu.edu/~bfrazer1/gk/

that explains how to set it up for XP.
it doesn't require an Install. you just copy files from the CD to the hard drive.

you also have to manually change the RESOURCE.CFG file that you copied from your GK CD.

Are there any easy configuration guides for DosBox out there?

I just don't understand what needs to be configured. I've run it on two very different XP systems, and all I did was run DOSBox, and that was it. All it takes is one "MOUNT C C" command to mount the hard drive. Where is the problem coming?

For the people who don't know how to work DOSBOX or have certain games that won't work in DOSBOX you might consider a dual boot. I have a Windows ME (which boots at DOS 7 prompt so I can play old DOS games) and a Windows XP Partition. Partition Magic works best for making a dual boot. I takes a little more PC knowledge but it works as a charm!

Well I had exactly the same problem with GK2 (in DOS sound disappeared for no reason and in Windows mode game just wouldn't work at all), although I have Windows98. But the DOSBox fixed it all right.

Have you tried INSTALLING the game through DOSBox first (rather than using DOSBox to launch previously installed game)?

the setup above is for GK1 on XP. I haven't tried it, but I've heard from others that it works.

Elaine, are you hearing the fanfare music before you get the error message? If yes, try these methods and see if either of them allows you to install on ME. I had a similar problem installing... I never figured out what was causing the problem (and not everyone with XP has it), so it might not be XP specific.

1) If you've installed other Sierra games, you may have a program on your computer called Sierra Setup & Uninstall. Check the Sierra folder in your Start menu. If you have it, launch this program and install GK2 this way. (If you don't have it on your computer, you might check any other Sierra games on your shelf from the early to mid 90s... I think this program showed up on my machine along with KQ7.) I could try to email you a copy of this program but I'm not positive it'll work.

2) If you can't use the Setup / Uninstall program as described above, copy ALL the files from your GK2 CD#1 onto your hard drive. Replace the setup.sol file with a setup.sol file from a different Sierra game (I used one from GK1). Then install from this folder, rather than from the CD. Once you've installed the game, you can delete the contents of CD#1 from your hard drive. If you can't find an older version of setup.sol, I can email this to you as well.

I am trying to install GK2 on my Windows XP but get errors in installing. Now the install wont even launch (prob will if I reboot) again.

Anyone know what to do to get this installed and running on a Winxp machine?

Thanks.
