Default Uru rings the 'not dead yet' bell

For those of you who don't run screaming at the mention of Myst, you might find this Letter from Rand interesting, as well as the changes in the "Getting Started" page (Kagi keeys no longer needed), and the new Invitation page

(If you'd like an invite, just holler)

Yay. Finally, Uru might be worth digging out.

Someone invite me by Easter, please .

Thanks for the heads up. Do I get this right, though: is Until URU the same as URU Live just before cancellation, as far as content is concerned?

There should be a good FAQ out soon, I'm working on it.

Jackal kindly did a news blurb, and posted a link to the FAQ: D'mala FAQ

Coolio! I remember my time in Uru beta... ok, it wasn't the most fantastic time I've spent online thanks to the horrendous netcode... but stair races were fun as was pushing the exploration beyond what Cyan wanted.

Part of the way up the stairs there was a blocked off bit we could break into... remember that? I don't remember seeing it in Uru or the addons. Maybe it is.

I'd like an invite, Eleri. Can you hook me up?

Also, has anyone gotten it to work on 56K? The FAQ says it's not supported, but it doesn't say anything like, "It will make your monitor explode." Can it be done?

Heh. I was actually in the beta (rather embarassingly I'm listed in the beta tester credits), but got stuck in the opening area at the trailer (I got lost or something at the time) and never actually got to meet up with other people.

I feel like such a fraud.

You can probably try it, but it'll just be really horribly lagged.

I know a few people who do dial up. It's slow, but not unuseable.
Sent Pony and invite, anyone else?

Hit me up. May give it a try sometime for nostalgia's sake.

I can't remember my av name on Uru Beta... may be there... no idea!

re 56k - for the opening of the beta (I joined in July, maybe June 2003?) I used 56k with no real issue.

Sent sent. There was some vault probelms over the weekend, cause some goober was running around with hacked data. Hopefully it's all better now, and they won't need to do a vault wipe.

Thanks, Eleri! I'll mess around with the graphics settings, that might help avoid lag.

Eleri, I'll definitely look you up when I get it working better. The lag has been a bit off-putting so far. It's fine until I open the KI window, and then I no longer have an actual cursor, just the memory of one. It could just be my connection.

Also, (and this is my problem with every Myst game I've played, no offense intended) I just don't know what's going on. I like exploration and everything, but it always feels like there either isn't any narrative pointing me in the right direction, or, worse yet, there's TONS of story and I'm too dumb to figure it out. It's the same problem I'm still having with Morrowind, even as I near the end of the main quest.

So, is there some kind of newbie quest in Until Uru? I barely know how to use the KI right now. Is there a way to "learn by doing"? I know, it's Myst, so I'm not asking for a lot of hints, just something to point me in the right direction.

Well, if you went through the cleft, that sets up the steps for the other ages. Have you poked at the poles on your island?

The latest letter from Rand, for the interested:
Quote:
Hi everyone,

Quick update on the state of the Uru, and a request for your help.

The new D'mala shard is up and running - feels like the cavern has a smidgen of life again. At last count there were well over a thousand invitees and growing. It's been a pleasure to meet and chat with many of you in the cavern. Thanks so much for supporting Uru as we move forward.

We're still moving forward with (all together now) "cautious optimism". The third party that is providing the limited funding for Until Uru is still evaluating the possibility of renewing full blown Until Uru, and the process involves seeing how many people respond to the D'mala shard invitation.

With that in mind I'd like to ask for your help. Until Uru is an unpublicized, grass-roots effort, and as such, the only way that many of the thousands of people who purchased Uru will even know about Until Uru is through word-of-mouth. Now is the time to spread the word. If you know people who have Uru but haven't tried the online aspect of it, please send them an invitation and encourage them to get a taste of it through Until Uru. And if you know Myst fans who haven't tried Uru at all, encourage them to pick up a copy of Complete Chronicles (at Amazon for as little as $4USD) and join the gathering. We do want new people to realize that they're not playing Uru Live, but this would be a great time for them to get a glimpse of what Uru Live will look like.

Anybody who is currently in Until Uru can send invitations. Please take advantage of this free invitation system to get as many people as you can to join the gathering in the cavern. You're the ones who can bring life back to Uru, and the more people you bring back to Uru, the greater chance we can bring Uru back to life. Thanks for your help.

See you in D'ni,
Rand
