Default Willy Beamish - copy protection?

Does the disk version of Willy Beamish have copy protection?

If so, can someone tell me what it is and where in the game it occurs? (I don't need the actual codes / puzzle solution, just want to know what it is.)

I have no clue. Why, are you having problems with it? I have the disk version on CD so i'm not sure.

Nah, just curiosity. I have the CD version (haven't played it yet). I suppose I could probably look it up online somewhere, but I thought someone may know off the top of their head.

My game has a CD insert-sized manual that looks like it could be a reproduction of the original manual. I was wondering if any of that information might be used as copy protection at some point in the game.

You have the CD version!? ARGHHHHH I'd kill for that. You're wicked lucky. The game just isn't the same without the voices.

Another great thrift store find. $1.99 at Goodwill.

If I ever come across another one I'll buy it for you.

As far as I know, none of the Dynamix adventure games have copy protection. Not sure about the cd rom version, but I can assure you that the disk version does not have a copy protection.

Interesting. The CD version probably doesn't... it was disks they would have been worried about people pirating.

How about the infamous timing bugs? Are they anywhere near the beginning of the game?

I thought games that old didn't have any copy protection? Anyway, timing bugs are caused by playing the game on a fast computer, thus the timing puzzles sped up as well. As long as you play it on an old computer or use DOSBox, you'll be fine.

People give adventure games into charity shops?

I always want to check in those store, I used to love them as a kid but now...theyre usualy empty so it seems like your the center of attention when you walk in and I hate that

So have you found allot of good games in thrift stores or was that a rare occasion?

The copy protection in games from the 80s and early 90s (before the games were on CD) tended to be in the form of a code or hint in the manual that was needed to play the game. The first game that I know of to include it was KQ3 and it was phased out sometime after KQ6, so I'm working on the assumption that anything released between 1986 and 1992 (by Sierra, anyway) has some form of copy protection. But apparently that's not always the case.

I know how to work around the timing bugs. I just want to know when / where they occur. Again, I suppose I could look it up, but I'm feeling extraordinarily lazy.

Quite a few, yes. Probably more than half of my games came from thrift stores.

Beamish has a lot of timed puzzles that can give trouble. But the only puzzle I couldn't pass without dosbox was the kitchen sequence halfway the game.

CD-version has no copyprotection

Yeah, I've got the disc version somewhere at home. It came with a whole bunch of stuff (stickers, Willy's notebook, etc.), but I don't recall there being any copy protection on it.

Great game.

I also think that the only problem you'll have is the kitchen sequence. I never had other timing problems...

Keep in mind that Sierra only published Willy, too. I don't know whether Dynamix games used to have copy protection at all.

I remember the time I played it, it did have some copy protection very late in the game.

If I remember correctly, at a certain point you needed to say a phrase (as mentioned earlier, somewhere at the end of the game) which wasn't mentioned anywhere in the game itself. However, pretty much every fanmade solution just told you the phrase, which always was the same supposedly. Also, there was a cracked copy floating around (no matter how lousy the protection was, it got cracked), so probably a lot of people didn't realize it was a copy-protection at all.

EDIT: So I googled and found Sierra's own solution, which states: "The correct hypnotic phrase can be found inside Dr. Jeckle's ad inside Willy's Meed Notebooklet, included with your game."
