Which adventure games to play?
 

After a long hiatus, I am finally getting back into adventure games (or games at all, for that matter).

The only new (and I use that term loosely) games I have played are:

* Grim Fandango
* EMI
* Runaway
* Fahrenheit
* Nancy Drew, #8, #12, #13.

I expect there are a lot of games from the last 6-8 years that I haven't played, so I expect the list to be quite long, but I'm going to give this some real effort.

Of course, I can't start playing until my computer gets fixed, but doesn't stop me from scouring eBay for good deals.

So what adventure games are there I should get/play?

I really want to play The Last Express, and I'm going to work my way through all the Nancy Drew games, and I should get around to playing the Myst series, too.

Other than that though, I'm a little clueless as to what I should be playing, there's so many threads about games I haven't even heard of.

I know I could just go through the site looking for all the games, but I'd rather start on games you guys suggest I play.

Still Life and Syberia are pretty good choices

Definately had been meaning to play Syberia. Al these games... this is going to be fun. :D

I'd say Sanitarium and The Moment Of Silence.

Beyond Good & Evil would also be a good choice, if you don't mind
playing an Action/Adventure game with a great story that is. ;)

Christ, what is it with this place and Beyond Good & Evil? :P Just kidding, I actually bought this one a few weeks ago, haven't played it much yet though as I er, got kinda stuck, and don't often have much motivation to play this sort of game. Will finish it off once I get my laptop working, though.

I haven't heard of Sanitarium, and the screenshots don't look like a very interesting game to me actually, but they're both on the list.

The graphic style and the interface takes some time to get used to, but believe me when i say the game is a masterpiece. ;)
The atmosphere is one of the best I've ever encountered in an adventure game and the story, although may seem a bit
cliched at the begining , is far from it.

You can also try Bad Mojo Redux if you wanna play something original, it's not everyone's cup of tea though.

In order of preferences:
Still Life
Syberia
Sanitarium
Shadow of Memories

And if you can bear Myst games, Myst 4 is great, too. (I see you mention the series in your post... well, Exile might be a good starting point, then)

Exile?- Feh!. Start with either the original or Revelation.

I disagree. Playing Revelation first could be awkward, because of the way it's related to Myst 1, and Myst 1 itself is too austere to attract someone to the series. In any case, it didn't attract me, when Exile did. Unless you're talking about RealMyst, in which case it's the opposite problem: after RealMyst, Riven will seem just too austere.

And Riven is too damn hard to be a starting point, "of course".

I haven't played any of the Myst games, but I have an inkling suspicion that I may not enjoy them a whole lot. I was going to go 1-5 anyway, but I think I will go with sound advice and just start with Exile then.

Talking about french games, you should rather try Omikron The Nomad Soul instead of BGE!
I don't understand what is all the fuss about BGE, I did finish it but I was greatly disapointed both by the characters & scenario and by the repetitive gameplay...
I don't know if Omikron was popular in its time back in 99 in the USA but appart from its few FPS sequences it's a great game.
Don't forget the Phantasmagoria games (especially the second one!).
You can give a try to Gabriel Knight 3 as well. Some people hated the gameplay (free 3d camera) but the game is great though.

Oh yeah! That's one game (GK3 [and 2 for that matter]) I'd always meant to play.

Is this Omikron game an adventure game?

I have the second Phantasmagoria game. Heehee. FMV = :9~ :D

Yes and no.
It starts out like a 3D direct control AG, but adds to it some action scenes, mainly fighting (as in any beat 'em all, only rather easy), shooting (as in any FPS, usually not too hard), and, I think, some jumping around.
There are a bunch of objects to collect, and people to talk to, and places to explore, and it really felt more like an AG than anything else at the beginning, but as the game goes on (to be fair, as it comes near its ending), the actions scenes - mainly the shooting scenes - become predominent.

Not really.
There's much less omnipresent action in Omikron, and much more freedom of exploration, object using, talking, etc...
Omikron doesn't feel like an interactive movie, it feels like an action-y adventure game.

Yes of course :) I was talking about the last part of the games which are more action-focused.

Oh.
Then yes, the gameplayand story are both getting thinner toward the end, as in Fahrenheit.

I nearly forgot.... Blade Runner!

Not only it didn't rely on the story of the movie but it really gave the players choices at different scenes of the game. If I remember well.. there were 16 endings! Ok, they were in fact 4 main endings with variants depending on the characters of the game.
It's strange that I never read anything comparing this game to Fahrenheit but BR felt more like an interctive drama for me ;)
