Proposed idea: Community Game Playthroughs
OK. After reading some of the comments in the "What would you change?" thread in Chit-Chat about how we don't have enough in-depth threads about older games, I had a thought...
Inspired by the activity on some Harry Potter forums where there are community chapter-by-chapter readthroughs for the books, what about having a section-by-section playthrough of a game? We'd pick an adventure game, and everyone who wanted to participate would start playing (or replaying it) up to a certain point. Like, for instance, if we picked Gabriel Knight 1, everyone might play it up to the end of Day One. Then we'd all discuss Day One of the game in-depth... our experiences solving the puzzles, any plot points revealed, etc. We'd stay on the same section for a week or so, then move on to playing and discussing the next section (like Day Two in GK1), and so on until we finished the game. Of course, it would mostly just be an excuse to get everyone on the same page for a game at the same time... people could post inspired threads outside the main game-playing thread, naturally. I personally was proposing Beneath a Steel Sky for the first game... partly because I need to play it myself anyway for a Many Deaths section, partly because it's an interesting game that's not too difficult, but mostly because it's freeware so it's easy for lots of people to "own" and play to participate in the thread. But generally I'd think we could choose whatever the next game might be by having nominations and a poll to vote on and such. What do y'all think? Does anyone else like this idea? Do any of you have refinements or suggestions to add? Do you think I'm nuts? Peace & Luv, Liz

I do think you're nuts, otherwise you wouldn't be here.
It may be interesting idea. Pity it will only really work well with games that are rather well-known, and at the same time have enough "depth" (I'm not sure BASS fits the second requirement, but I agree that its accessibility make it a great choice to start this).

AFGNCAAP:
Well, BaSS was just a suggestion... I'm certainly open to other ideas. My other personal vote would be Gabriel Knight 1, but we could even go with something like Grim Fandango, for instance. As for the well-known thing... for whatever "main" thread is going on, it would help if it was well-known, yes. But there's no reason that there can't be more than one play-through thread going on at a time. Maybe we could have one main thread for a well-known game and one thread for an "obscure" game (that still at least a few people have heard of). Maybe we could have a Myst-style game thread and an not-Myst-style game thread. Maybe we could pick an indie game for the Amateur forum. I just wanted excuses to get several people playing the same game at mostly the same time for a while to generate some "retro" game discussion, so the idea's all flexible. Peace & Luv, Liz

I think that sounds like a fantastic idea, Jeysie. I just played BASS, but I'll join in on whatever game you guys might choose next.

I like that idea, keep it retro. Hardly of us have all the new hybrid adventure games.
I vote for Space Quest 4.

I certainly don't vote for Space Quest IV. I am never, repeat never playing the shopping mall section ever again .

This sounds like fun, and I've never played BASS, but I don't have the game. I'll wait until we start up another one.
I play most of my games along with a friend, so this would be right up my alley. It is nice to have discussions and work through puzzles with someone else. It also helps slow me down, as I tend to 'marathon play'. I've learnt that my patience wears thin the longer I've been at the game, and I'm more apt to look for hints to move me along. Quote:
Some of the games that would be fun for me to replay: Beyond Atlantis, Timelapse, Zork Nemesis, Zork Grand Inquisitor and Morpheus.

This seems like a good idea, Jeysie! I'll try and participate (though I know I'll be tempted to 'cheat' and just comment from memory without replaying the game --- is that allowed?).

Another advantage of BASS is that Mr Ince is likely to visit us and drop some interesting piece of trivia.
I'm starting to really like this idea.
