Default Favorite Lucasart adventure

A recent thread spurred my interest. So let's hear it, which one rulez the most.

The top immortal five for me are Dig, DOTT, Grim Fandango, Monkey 2 and Fate of Atlantis.

Best atmosphere: The Dig
Best puzzles: DOTT
Best dialogue: Grim Fandango
Best story: Grim Fandango
Most fun: The Dig

My favorite game of all time is Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. I love The Secret of Monkey Island and Loom almost as much, but I think that Indy is the best of the three, objectively. (longer than Loom, and without the boring parts and sometimes illogical puzzles of MI)
And then Grim Fandango, DOTT, MI2, and The Dig are an inch behind. With Sam and Max, of course.

I haven't played half of them (*dodges panning*), and I think I should restrain from voting at least until I play Fate of Atlantis, which has been gathering dust on my shelf for ages now, yet looks like I may fall in love with it (though, honestly, I found Last Crusade terribly disappointing). For today my favourites are Grim Fandango, Monkey Island 2 and Loom - in that order.

I haven't played the last crusade or Labyrinth and I never finished Maniac Mansion.

FoA and Last Crusade are very different, gameplay-wise. There are many more locations in FoA, all the fights can be avoided without running through obscure dialog trees, there's a maze but it's a good one, the game is longer, has three different paths, an incredibly huge amount of puzzles, some sweet and easy mini games (unlike the plane part in Last Crusade), and it's an original story, so it's much more involving than just playing through a movie that you've seen. Also, it's much prettier than Last Crusade.

And the fighting can be controlled with the mouse. You have no idea how much easier this is (and there's an instant win key).

I like the non-linearity parts of Monkey 2 and DOTT.

Grim Fandango, easily, followed by Sam and Max Hit the Road, then Full Throttle. Grim Fandango just had everything. Who knew that film noir, death, and Spanish culture could blend so seamlessly? The dialogue is dry and witty, the characters are fantastic, the music is solid gold (I've never listened to a game soundtrack nearly as much as I have the GF ST), the puzzles are logical, and everything just falls into place. I know it's pretty common to put Grim as the best adventure game ever, but I just can't resist... it's pure awesome packed up tight into two CDs of spifftasticness.

I hated the controls in Grim Fandango, thats the only reason I hate that game. They were worse than Monkey Island 4.

As I said in another thread, they were pretty natural to me. Numberpad to walk, 5 to look, + to pick up items, 0 to open inventory. I understand having trouble with them, though, I know what it's like to get totally frustrated with controls to the point where a game becomes unplayable... they just seemed to totally click once I started using the numpad.

Day of the Tentacle, simply because it was perfect. Or, as near to perfect as possible. Monkey Island 2 comes up second, followed by Grim Fandango. Grim Fandango would be higher, maybe on the top, if it weren't for the darned control scheme (and, before anyone mentions it, I'm not asking for point-n-click. I'm just saying the keyboard controls were horribly implemented.)

I've not played Grim Fandango but is there any way you could set up a game pad for that game?

Yes most gamepads allow you to map the keys to the buttons.

I played it with a gamepad.

Althoug if you are playing GF on a modern machine one of the puzzles is a bi awkward (i.e it goes too fast) --- The Elevator and forklift puzzle.

You don't even have to do that, it supports analogue gamepads natively. I don't understand why people whine about Grim Fandango's controls while insisting on playing it with the keyboard - would you play a flight sim with the keyboard and complain? Quake without a mouse? Nah, thought not!

I agree that a gamepad makes Grim's interface a bit more palatable, although IMHO it still sucks and mars an otherwise fabulous game.

My sentimental favorite is Curse of Monkey Island... it combines beautiful graphics with top-notch voice acting and a host of wonderfully kooky characters.

My intellectual favorite, however, is Fate of Atlantis. It feels just like playing a fourth Indy movie, and has a fun plot and puzzles.

I have to admit that while I liked Day of the Tentacle, I just don't manage to feel as strongly about it as other people seem to.

Of course, ranking LucasArts adventures is like ranking Godiva chocolates... even the ones at the "bottom" of the list are still damn tasty.

Peace & Luv, Liz

I agree. The only games that are starting to feel "dated" to me are Zak McKracken and Maniac Mansion (yes, even Deluxe).
