Default Sam and Max: Why is it funny?

Hi, I've read a few threads and it seems to many that 'Sam and Max' is the funniest adventure game around.

Am I the only one who didn't find this game funny? I do have a sense of humour, my fav game (and to me the funniest) is DiscWorld Noir, and Ive also got all three 'Broken Swords', Grim Fandango, Monkey Island 3 amoungst others.

But appart from the opening scene I've barely found anything in this game so far to be funny.

To each his own. I though it was hilarious.

Don't worry. I didn't think it was funny either.

They made fun of a lot of stuff, but I found a lot of it rather stupid. The game was still entertaining though.

I have to say I never laughed out loud while playing the game, but I rarely break out in laughter. However I do know it is funny, I mostly enjoy the mix between the cute Max, and his often violent and dark remarks.

The humor is a little esoteric. Well, not really esoteric. It just doesn't appeal to a lot of people. That's not saying that only a few people found the game funny, though.

Yeah, I have found some of it funny. That mutated cat at the start- MAX: it's such a cute kitty - LETS TIE ITS FEET TOGETHER! I've had the urge to do that to my cat now...

probably because of the gobbledygook and good use of words. It takes a while to understand the words.

Really?

*Stares at Sam and Max game for several minutes then looks back up*

How long?

You mean there are jokes within the jokes? Intertextual references?

I think it's the intellectual talk

Sam: I see that old Mr. Bosco is generously giving away his profits to the underpriveleged ski-mask wearing youth of the neighborhood again.

There is more than one reason why I like Sam and Max, but the one you just mentioned is probably the most important one for me.

I really liked the setting, story and atmosphere of it, but most of the puzzles were just plain weird with little or no hints pointing to their solution.

It wasn't that sarcastic - just toilet humour. I think the locations seemed a little too small too.

One of the many reasons I find Sam & Max so funny is that Max looks so cute and innocent but has such a twisted mind...

There are also lots of dialogue I can't help but find amusing, for example:

Sam: Gee, I hope there was no one on that bus!
Max: Nobody we know or care about, at least...

Sam: What a cute little hypercephalic kitten!
Max: I'll call him "Mittens," since he'd make a good pair of them.

There are lots of different reasons why Sam and Max is funny. One is the satire with which it attacks stuff like burger chains and naff tourist traps. Another is the character dynamic, especially between the two main characters. Some of it is deliberately tasteless gross humour; e.g. finding the instructions in the kitten. Most of all it is the wordplay and banter. It is a game which refuses point-blank to talk down to it's audience, and that is why it still remains refreshing.

S&M is pretty high brow, so it can't be considered low brow, toilet-humor.

How come noone has mentioned Conroy Bumkis?

Is there any villain funnier than the short arsed, balding and vain country singer? How dare he come between the union of a bigfoot and Giraffe necked girl?

I will replay Sam and Max again and snort milk through my nose as I always do when I play that game.
