Yep, I agree with other posters. First one is by no means essential to be able to play 2nd and 3rd but it adds some nice depth and familiarity. The bigger issue is if you want to play the first one at some point as the sequels have huuuuuuge spoilers. (Also the gameplay issues in the 2st title might seem more harsh if you already experienced the smoother sequels.)
Personally I'd play them in order. I will replay all three at some point in the future.
