TiAgUh's definitely right about him being an acquired taste -- but you can definitely see him as an influence on Danielewski (in particular, the parts written by Johnny Truant - who is similar in a lot of ways to some of Pynchon's paranoid characters).
Gravity's Rainbow's a sprawling beast, and - in my opinion - very good; but definitely not the place to start. I'd agree again with ^ about The Crying of Lot 49
