Sorry to make You feel sad. A beautiful boxed copy on the shelf gives me that warm, fuzzy feeling (just as a book does, in contrast to an e-book). The ability to "connect to the Steam community by pressing something+F1", not so much.
I'm glad Steam "makes for a better gaming experience" for You though.
