Larger cities and towns can also be reached by carriage for a small amount of gold, even if you haven't visited them before, so the traveling system is actually quite flexible, in my opinion. Just go to the stables, and talk to the person driving the carriage. After you accept the ride, the game will transport you instantly to the location.
