I did exactly that. I had read and really loved the first three books in the series, and then pretty much gave up on King ever finishing it. By the time the later ones came out, I had to start all over again, which was actually a good thing as far as continuity went. I have mixed feelings about some of the later books, especially the introduction of
Spoiler:
the author into the storyline
but I think King redeemed himself with the ending.

I think translating the stories to the screen would be very difficult to do well.
