You can use the iPod as a USB drive. For that you have to reformat it and for that you have to use iTunes. But iTunes doesn't mess up your music library. It can 'make its own library' if you wish, but you can also use the library you already painstakingly made yourself. And if you choose to let iTunes handle its own library you can define the place where it is located, and iTunes makes neat directories with human-readable names. It's not the horrible iPhoto .
