I agree with you and I think Heavy Rain is an awesome example of the character's home being a great source of mood. The contrast between the two homes is something that really pulled me in to his world and gave of so much emotion.

Edit: Oh yeah, and I thought the recurring visits to Nico's apartment worked great as a way to break up moments of tension in BS 1.
And I found exploring it in the 3D BS 3 fascinating.
On a side note, I REALLY do hope I will be able to explore George's home/apartment one day! I wonder what it would be like...
