I (XP SP 2) didn't even tinker with Compatibility. The only thing I had to change in my system settings to get GAG working was the
Color Quality (right-click the desktop, Display Properties) - I switched it from Highest (32 bit) to Medium (16 bit):
There's a diagnostic program on the GAG install disc (aptly named PCINFO.EXE) that checks your system and tells you if you need to change something:
