I'm not entirely sure what you mean by that. Isn't that what many Myst-like games offer? Except maybe for the small location. But if you like games with lots of standalone logic puzzles and not much else, I recommend the
7th guest (1992), the
11th Hour (1996),
Jewels of the Oracle 1 and 2 (1995 and 1998),
Karma: Curse of the 12 Caves.
Fantastic puzzle games with more exploration and tons of atmosphere are the
Neverhood (1996) and the recent
Machinarium, which also has inventory-based puzzles.
In the Myst-like department I recommend my beloved
Obsidian (1997).
