BTW, saw Lemony Snickett a while back. Amazing work from Jim Carrey, all those roles... Also, really gorgeous end-credits. The movie was quite good, but it had so much more potential.
People will lap up whatever they're given, whatever they're told to like. The easier to digest, the better. It's the same way with music, games, culture, everyday life - people are undiscerning and go for the quick fix because they have grown up and become saturated with that stuff and don't know any better.
