Actually, I do think it's as simple as that. A third person adventure featuring those characters and being set in that fictional universe, building on the legacy of the other four games is a Monkey Island adventure by definition, I think. Just like a movie featuring the Death Star (and also, set in that universe) is a Star Wars movie.
No, it doesn't make it a good game or a good movie, I agree on that, and no, it isn't a list to check off, but basically, putting together those elements into an adventure game makes a Monkey Island game, even if we don't visit the island itself.
