Watched a couple of movies last weekend ...

BATMAN BEGINS

Finally ! Never got around seeing it in three years.
I´ve never been a comic fan but Batman is for sure my favourite superhero because, after all,
he´s still "just" a human being w/o superpowers.

What can I say ?

I absolutely loved it. Very good acting (even Katie Holmes was fine - I expected to hate her performance),
great direction by Nolan, even better atmosphere, intriguing villains etc.

I don´t know if it stays true to the comics, and honestly ... I don´t care

After first viewing a strong 9/10
Can´t wait to see DARK KNIGHT on DVD

THE MIST

Another good watch.
Some of the acting seemed a bit stiff, but I liked the B-movie style story line (reminded me e.g. of Half Life).
Very supenseful throughout. The ending seems to be a matter of love it or hate it.
Personally I liked it. It´s interesting to think about how you would possibly react in such a situation ...

Strong 8/10 points

I´d love to watch the black & white version.
I have to get my hands on the Special Edition ...

THE HAPPENING

phew ...

I expected it to be a lot worse after all the flack it got on imdb & rottentomatoes. But it isn´t a good movie either.
Not by a long shot.
The premise is cool and some scenes work pretty well (my favourite is the jeep sequence ...)
but there´s not enough chemistry between the actors to make you believe in their feelings for each other.

The movie is too short as well.
It suddenly ends around the 1 1/2 hour mark.
There´s this very long story set-up (which I like) and then suddenly BAM
Spoiler:
3 months later
and shortly after it
Spoiler:
... starts all over again in Paris
.

Not a good way to end a movie IMO

A weak 6/10

And finally

INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL

This is a tough one.

Can´t say that I wasn´t etertained throughout the movie.
But I wasn´t blown away by it either.
It´s inevitable to compare it with the 80´s trilogy.

I didn´t expect it to be on par with CRUSADE not to mention THE adventure movie RAIDERS and it is better than TEMPLE OF DOOM, a movie I loath (except for the first action scene & the one on the bridge).
Furthermore everybody told me how badly it sucks.
My expectations were pretty low, probably that´s why I wasn´t disappointed.

OK, the already infamous fridge scene is debatable.
But it´s sooo over the top that I got a few good laughs out of it.
And I was under the impression I laughed with the movie not at it.

The only sequence I flat-out hate is the one in the jungle towards the end.
Anybody who´s seen the movie probably knows what I´m talking about
Spoiler:
henry "tarzan" jones III & the monkey tribe

Some characters were forgettable (Winstone´s for instance) and the effects looked cheap from time to time (especially the very first shot) and it´s no good idea to start an Indy movie with
Spoiler:
an Elvis Presley song, even if it´s set in the fifties

There are several more nit-picks ... but nothing crucial.

The bottom line:

it isn´t bad but in the end a pretty redundant addition to the series

Raiders of the Lost Ark 10/10
Last Crusade 9/10
Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull 6.5/10
Temple Of Doom 3.5/10 (Capshaw I hate you)
