I agree with the recommendations with a few comments. Shivers2, as much as I loved the game, had a horrible timed sequence at the end that drove may players to tears. With the exception of one puzzle, Lighthouse is a wonderful game. Amber is a difficult game to port to current PCs, but if you can do it, you will enjoy it.
If you like a bit of subtle humor in your games, which most of the Zork games provide, I would certainly look at Callahan's Crosstime Saloon. And maybe some later Space Quest games.
