I've just seen a bunch of good popcorn movies: Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Speed Racer. (I read a lot of comics, and have seen barely any anime.)
The Marvel movies were very well-done and surprisingly simple. It's like they've boiled the characters down to the most basic elements which every writer agrees on (mostly elements from the 60's), and just had fun with those. I look forward to the sequels, which are more likely to surprise me a little. Still, lots of fun.
Speed Racer was terrific, though I kept looking over my shoulder to make sure no one saw me with it. It's not at all that it was bad- just embarassingly babyish in its appearance. But halfway through I stopped caring if anyone saw me, because I was having way too much fun. There are a few sequences which had me temporarily confused, and there are these obnoxious sidekicks I'd love to see get grisly deaths, but otherwise it's nonstop fun. I don't know whether I'd recommend it to anyone at all, but I had a great time.
