For history/mystery game I can't think of anything better than the Gabriel Knight series: unlike what said Sik, I'd start out with the first one in the series, Sins of the father, and then I'd play them in order: they've a pretty strong environment that grow from chapter to chapter. If you like the Agatha Christie style, perhaps the most suited is the third one anyway, but take my advice: play them in order.

For games like Scratches, I recommend Barrow Hill and if you manage to get it work Amber: Journeys Beyond
