Oh, but it can. Not on every hit, but if you have bad luck, it hits in an angle that does pierce through the thing. And chainmail is easy pickings.

Depends on what kind of sword you use. But I have to say, most actors these days (in movies. On the theatrical stage, there's a reason why it's not supposed to look too realistic.) don't know how to wield a sword. They actually try to meet the other's sword, when the point of using a sword is stabbing your opponent (even if you're just doing it for sport).
