Here I shall put my ISEB certified testing skills into action:

Strictly speaking, alpha versions of products are releases that are tested "on site" rather than given out to the wider world and betas are tested "off site".

Planning for testing has to be an integral part of any software design. Ideally, each subcomponent of any software should be thoroughly tested on its own before it is integrated into a larger system, but this can be hard to do with games.
