Got the book (the wonderfully informative "How to Hold a Crocodile" I have a hardback copy of the 1981 edition) In the 19th century there were apparently flower dictionaries to aid interpretation.

Good alternatives to Roses could be

Bluebell - Constancy
Cedar Leaf - I live for thee
Jonquil - Please return my affection
Spearmint - Warmth of sentiment
Water Lily - Purity of heart

But probably best to avoid

Red Balsam - Touch me not
French Marigold - Jealousy
Lavender - Distrust
Evening Primrose - Inconstancy
Snakesfoot - Horror

A thread most controversial, that’s what I want to start
Full of impassioned arguments, of posting from the heart
And for this stimulation all will be thankful to me
On come on everybody it won’t work if you agree
